Point Loma’s Scalzo Leads All-PacWest Team Selections

IRVINE, Calif. – The 2021 PacWest Men’s Soccer All-Conference Team is headlined by Parker Scalzo from Point Loma, who is the PacWest Player of the Year after he led the conference in goals this season.

Biola also won three special awards with Izaac Zausch as Defender of the Year, Theo Le Calve as Newcomer of the Year and Adam Jones as the PacWest Freshman of the Year after the Eagles earned their first NCAA postseason berth. Azusa Pacific’s David Blomquist repeated as the PacWest Coach of the Year, and Jeremy Zielinski from Hawai`i Pacific is the PacWest Goalkeeper of the Year.

Scalzo scored nine goals this season as he helped Point Loma finish in second place in the PacWest standings, just one point behind first place. It is tied for the program’s best finish in the PacWest. The junior forward had three multi-goal games this season in wins against Cal State San Marcos, Fresno Pacific and Dominican. In the win over Dominican, Scalzo scored twice in the final minutes after the Sea Lions trailed 2-1 for his fourth game-winning goal of the season.

Zausch played every minute of the season for Biola, which held its opponents to just 21 goals this season. The Eagles defense produced five shutouts and held opponents to only 67 shots on goal. Zausch scored three goals on the season and assisted one as well. His second goal helped Biola to a 2-1 win over Fresno Pacific as Biola went on to finish third in the PacWest standings and earned an at-large bid into the NCAA postseason.

Le Calve scored six goals and assisted three others for an average of 1.15 points per match this season. He scored the game-winning goal at Fresno Pacific and scored three goals in the final two matches of the regular season. Le Calve took at least one shot in each of the final nine matches that he played. Biola’s 11 wins and third-place finish in the conference are both program bests since joining the PacWest.

Jones tallied five goals and three assists in his freshman season. He scored twice against Academy of Art and became a key part of Biola’s offense after that. Biola was the only PacWest team this year to go undefeated during its trip to Hawaii and Jones was a key part to that success. He scored the game-winning goal against Chaminade, then he scored a goal and assisted another at Hawai`i Pacific, and finally he assisted a goal at Hawai`i Hilo. Jones made it four matches in a row with at least one point after he scored and assisted a goal in Biola’s 5-2 win over Concordia.

Zielinski produced eight shutouts this year for Hawai`i Pacific and finished his career with the Sharks with 13 total shutouts. That is tied for the fifth most in PacWest history for a career and tied for sixth most in a single season. Zielinski had a 1.07 goals-against average and an 81.3 save percentage, which ranked 17th in the nation this year. During the Sharks’ trip to northern California, the senior keeper produced four shutouts in a row, including three 1-0 victories to put the Sharks in title contention going into the final week of the season.

Blomquist is the PacWest Coach of the Year for the fourth time in his career. He led Azusa Pacific to its third-consecutive PacWest title this year, which is only the first time in two decades that a team has won the title three times in a row. He is now tied with Petar Draskin from Grand Canyon for the most PacWest Coach of the Year awards.

Azusa Pacific scheduled a tough non-conference schedule, facing five teams that would go on to be ranked in the Super Region at the end of the season and went 4-1-1 before the start of the conference season. The Cougars went on to win their final six conference matches, ending the regular season with a 12-2-2 record. They clinched the PacWest title by beating Biola 3-2 in overtime on a goal by David Kwinn and earned the right to host their first round match at the NCAA Super Regional.

Kwinn, along with James Ndubueze, Gregoire Diep and Joseph MacPherson all earned first-team All-PacWest honors for Azusa Pacific. Biola had three players make the first team with Lawrence Kwazema joining Le Calve and Zausch. Scalzo, Corey Lundeen and Matthew Abangan earned first-team honors for Point Loma. Concordia was also represented on the first team by Alex Perez. Fresno Pacific’s Fellipe Souza tallied six goals and seven assists this season to also earn first-team recognition. He now has 30 goals and 18 assists in his career and ranks tied for 13th in PacWest history for career points.

Concordia’s Willy Ospina became the 16th player in PacWest history to be named to the All-PacWest time four times in his career. He has played in 55 matches in his career, helping the Eagles win 28 matches in that time. A total of six players earned their third career All-PacWest honor, including Gerrit Arzberger from Hawai`i Pacific and Eddie Silverbush from Dominican along with Ndubueze, Souza, Diep and Lundeen.
