Scalzo Wins His Third PacWest Player of the Week Award

IRVINE, Calif. -- Dominican now has the conference’s longest active winning streak and best overall record at 4-0-1 after winning two more matches last week against Sonoma State and Menlo. Then Penguins are kicking off their final non-conference game now against San Francisco State as they try to become the first PacWest team this year to reach five wins.

In the win against Menlo, Joe Blakely scored the first two goals in the first half, and then Aboubacar Cisse scored in the second half to take a 3-0 lead. The Penguins held on for a 3-2 victory with Menlo scoring both goals late in the game.

Point Loma won the first PacWest match of the season, beating Fresno Pacific, 3-0, despite being outshot by the Sunbirds. Seth Ketterer made eight saves in the win to record his second shutout of the year and put the Sea Lions on top of the standings with three points.

Chaminade opened the week with a 4-3 overtime win against Western Washington on Tuesday with Joaquin Maud making the golden goal off an assist by Brison Kim. The Silverswords are now 2-2 on the season.

Hawai`i Hilo also defeated the Vikings, 3-2, on Sunday after taking an overtime defeat against No. 17 Seattle Pacific earlier in the week. The Vulcans had led 2-0 in that match, but the Falcons scored twice at the start of the second half and then found the game-winner in overtime.

This week, Hawai`i Pacific will host No. 17 Seattle Pacific and Fresno Pacific will go to Sonoma State on Tuesday. On Wednesday, Azusa Pacific will play at Hawai`i Hilo.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Parker Scalzo, Point Loma
F, Jr., 6-4 -- Murrieta, Calif.
Scalzo scored the first two goals in Point Loma’s 3-0 win over Fresno Pacific in the first PacWest match of the season, putting the Sea Lions in first place in the PacWest standings. It was Scalzo’s second-consecutive multi-goal game as he scored four goals in a row for Point Loma, while the Sea Lions held opponents scoreless during that span. He scored his first of the two goals against the Sunbirds in the 32nd minute, taking pass from Townsend Meyer and shooting from just inside the box for his third goal of the season. Then in the 62nd minute, he scored an unassisted goal from a similar position on the field to become the PacWest leader in goals and points this season. The Sea Lions scored one more goal on a penalty kick to win the match. Scalzo has notched five multi-goal games in his career with the Sea Lions. He now has two game-winning goals this season, which is tied for the most in the PacWest as Point Loma improved to 3-2-1 overall heading into a non-conference match with Concordia.

DEFENDER OF THE WEEK
Omer Tal, Academy of Art
GK, Fr., 6-1 -- Nesher, Israel
Tal made his first career start on Wednesday and made it a memorable performance in goal for the Urban Knights. He recorded a nine-save shutout in 110 minutes of work to help Academy of Art tie its non-conference match against Holy Names. Tal faced a total of 16 shots and he saved all nine that were on frame to keep a clean sheet in the first match of his collegiate career. He was under constant pressure throughout the first half, but made five saves to keep the match tied. In a span of 10 minutes during the second half, the Hawks created several goal-scoring opportunities, but Tal saved all four shots that were on goal to again preserve his shutout. In overtime, the Hawks had a shot go off the top of the frame and later earned a corner kick, but Tal finished strong to earn a draw in the match.
