Penguins' Reyes, Vulcans Hamada Earn PacWest Awards

Point Loma picked up four points in the PacWest men’s soccer race, while Hawaii Hilo, Hawaii Pacific and Dominican kept just off that pace with 1-0 records (three points) last week. UH Hilo freshman Koki Hamada scored twice and Dominican’s Alejandro Reyes kept a lot of shots out of the goal to highlight action this past week.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Hawai`i Hilo’s Koki Hamada, D, 6-2, Fr., Kita, Japan                                 
Hawai`i Hilo hosted Fresno Pacific in a shootout last week, and Vulcan freshman defender Koki Hamada provided a lot of the offense in the 3-3 draw. After the Sunbirds built a 2-0 lead, the Japan native scored the next two UHH scores to draw even at 2-2—one on a penalty kick and another on a shot just after the second half began. Hamada and the Vulcans are one of the surprise teams in the PacWest this year with a 2-1-1 league mark and they are 3-4-4 overall under first-year coach Garrett Estrin. On the season, Hamada has four goals and eight points, third on the UH Hilo squad.
 
DEFENDER OF THE WEEK: Dominican’s Alejandro Reyes, GK, 6-3, Sr., Elk Grove, Calif.               
Dominican goalkeeper Alejandro Reyes helped his Penguin squad shutout Academy of Art on Sunday, 3-0, as DUC improved to 9-4 overall and to 5-1 in the PacWest. Reyes had seven saves in the blanking, a season high for the 6-foot-3 senior. Reyes has four shutouts on the year, second best in the PacWest, and his 40 total saves also ranks second in the conference.

POINT LOMA POSTS FOUR POINTS: The PacWest Team of the Week is the Point Loma Sea Lions. Point Loma had two very different matches last week, tying Biola in a scoreless draw and holding off Azusa Pacific in a 4-3 shootout. Against the Eagles, the Sea Lions blanked a squad that had only been scoreless in one other match all season. Seth Ketterer had three saves in the shutout. Against the Cougars, PLNU scored the first four goals of the match, only to see APU storm back to nearly steal the win. The Sea Lions had goals by four different players in improving to 5-4-3 overall and to 2-1-1 in PacWest play.

PACWEST NEWS AND NOTES: The week began with a non-conference tie between Academy of Art and Fresno Pacific, 1-1. The Urban Knights goalkeeper Jaiden Brooks had 10 saves…Holy Names improved to 3-1 in the PacWest (5-3-3 overall) with a 3-1 win at Chaminade…Hawaii Pacific then cooled off the Hawks with a 1-0 win on Saturday, with Gerrit Arzberger scoring the lone goal of the match on a penalty kick…One day after the original kick-off was postponed because of weather conditions, Biola and Concordia squared off on Sunday in Irvine. Biola erased a 2-0 Concordia lead with two second half scores to knot the match at 2-2…Dominican remains on top of the standings with a 5-1 record (15 points), followed by Biola (3-0-2) and Holy Names (3-2). Three teams are 2-1-1—Hawaii Hilo, Point Loma and ConcordiaBiola’s Kristian Colaci leads the PacWest with 10 goals scored, while Academy of Art’s Gilly Miller paces the league with five assists.

LOOKING AHEAD: Holy Names faces off with Hawai`I Hilo on Tuesday, while southern California squads square off on Wednesday with Point Loma at Concordia and Biola at Azusa Pacific. The Hawaii teams begin their trek into southern California on Saturday with UH Hilo visiting Biola and Chaminade traveling to Azusa Pacific.
