Biola Snags Four MSOC Awards, Penguins Frank is Coach of the Year

The Biola University men's soccer team won a share of the Pacific West Conference championship and a trip to Texas for the NCAA tournament. When their flight lands today in San Antonio, they will learn that they have won four of the conference's special awards as well.

Dominican's David Frank, whose team shared that banner with the Eagles, is the Pacific West Conference Coach of the Year. Concordia forward Anthony Morales is the conference's Freshman of the Year, but Biola can lay claim to the Player of the Year (Kristian Colaci), the Defender of the Year (Izaac Zausch), the Goalkeeper of the Year (JD Gunn) and the Newcomer of the Year (Jakob Schnitzler).

David Frank led his team to the co-conference title, the first PacWest banner for Dominican in any sport. Picked to finish seventh in the coaches preseason poll, Frank directed the Penguins to a 12-6 overall record and an 8-2 mark in the PacWest in his fifth season at the helm. Both records are high marks for Dominican since joining the PacWest in 2009. After finishing 3-6-1 in the conference a year ago, Dominican won four in a row to begin league play this year and sat at the top of the PacWest standings for almost the entire season.

Biola forward Kristian Colaci made an immediate and huge impact on the Eagle team this year. The junior transfer from Texas A&M International led the PacWest in scoring with 15 goals and 33 total points, both totals easily surpassing the next person on the list. He scored in 10 of the 15 matches he played, including twice against Hawai`i Pacific, Azusa Pacific and defending national champion Cal State LA. The shot maker (69 on the year, 38 on goal) led the PacWest in those two categories as well. As a sophomore at Texas A&M International, the Italian scored 12 goals.

Colaci's teammate Izaac Zausch is the PacWest Defender of the Year for the second time. He was also picked prior to the 2022 season as the PacWest Preseason Defender of the Year. The senior from Texas anchored a Biola defense that gave up just 18 goals in 17 matches. A First Team All-Region selection last year, Zausch was second on the Eagle squad this year with four assists. The Biola Male Athlete of the Year in 2021-22, Zausch spent his first two seasons at St. Edwards, where he was an All-Lone Star Conference selection.

Biola Eagle goalkeeper JD Gunn, like Zausch, was the coaches pick as the Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year, and transitioned from that to 2022 Goalkeeper of the Year. Gunn of course was the last stop for that stingy Eagle defense, giving up only 18 goals in 17 matches for a 1.059 GAA. The junior from Panama had 57 saves and a .760 save percentage, second in the PacWest, as was his seven shutouts. Gunn had a conference-high 13 saves in a September match against Concordia and has helped lead his team to two straight NCAA tournament appearances.

The newest member of the Biola team to earn an award is defender Jakob Schnitzler, the PacWest Newcomer of the Year. A sophomore, Schnitzler transferred from Westcliff (NAIA) where he was the CalPac Defensive Player of the Year as a freshman. The 6-foot-4 German helped Gunn and Zausch keep opponents to an offensive minimum, allowing only 18 goals in 17 matches, while also managing four assists on the season.

Concordia rookie Anthony Morales was the only player to break up this Biola player award list. Morales is the PacWest Freshman of the Year, and is also the only freshman to win First Team All-PacWest honors. The Orange, Calif. native and Villa Park HS alum had seven goals on the season to rank seventh in the PacWest. He twice had two goals in a single contest, once against Point Loma and once versus Chaminade. A true freshman, Morales started every match this season for the Golden Eagles.

Joining the five award winners on the First Team All-PacWest squad is Hawai`i Pacific's Gerrit Arzberger, who is making his fourth appearance on a All-PacWest team. Co-champ Dominican had two members, Brian Sanchez and Louie Galdamez, while Biola's Theo Le Calve picked up his second all-conference award. Rounding out the First Team is Azusa Pacific's 2021 Player of the Year Gregoire Diep, Erik Arias of Holy Names, Marco Astorga of APU, and Point Loma's Milan Diklic.
