GAINESVILLE, Ga. – With a final-round score of 1-over-par 73,
Anahi Servin from Academy of Art won the 2022 NCAA Division II National Championships title with a three-day score of 5-under-par 211 at the Chattahoochee Golf Club on Thursday.
Servin was in first place throughout the final day and a half of the national championships and made three birdies in the final round to win the title, finishing four shots ahead of the second-place finisher, Olivia Mitchell from DBU.
Servin made an eagle late in the final round of the NCAA West Super Regional to narrowly earn the right to go to the national championships, and once she arrived in Georgia, Servin made the most of the opportunity. The three-time PacWest Champion opened the tournament with a 3-under-par 69 to finish the first day tied for first place.
In the second round, Servin registered the same score again to take sole possession of first place at six shots under par. That gave her a three-stroke lead going into the final round, which she completed before many of her closest competitors had started their final round.
Servin had one birdie and five pars on her first six holes before her first bogie of the day. She was at even par at the turn and stayed there with five pars in a row, getting through some of the toughest holes on the course unscathed. On the 15
th hole, she got back in the red with her tournament-best 13
th birdie over the course of the three rounds. When she sunk the last shot of her extraordinary collegiate career on the 18th hole, she was at 5-under-par 211 for the tournament to be the leader in the clubhouse.
That led to nearly five hours of scoreboard watching for the Urban Knights’ fans. Lee’s Alex Naumovski was Servin’s closest competitor throughout most of the tournament, and she recorded two birdies in the first seven holes to get within two strokes of first place with 11 holes left to be played. Scores throughout the field of 98 golfers were up during the final round. Naumovski, who had only recorded one double bogey all tournament, went five shots over par on the 15
th hole, putting her out of contention for the individual title.
DBU’s Mitchell shot up the leaderboard at the last second with four birdies on the last six holes to move into second place. Servin had built a large enough lead to make it impossible for Mitchell to catch up despite her strong finish.
Servin’s list of accolades continues to grow with not only a record-smashing 13 career PacWest Golfer of the Week awards, but also four PacWest Golfer of the Year selections and four All-American awards. To top it all off, the native of Asuncion, Paraguay, now has a National Champion trophy.
Servin is the first NCAA Division II Women’s Golf National Champion from the PacWest and just the third ever from the NCAA West Super Region. She is also the first individual national champion from the PacWest in a sport other than track & field since 2004.
