Urban Knights Win Two, Sea Lions Tie a Tough Pair

The Urban Knights went unbeaten on the week, thanks in part to their King who didn’t let any ball get behind him. The Sea Lions went into the Northwest and came away with a pair of two totally different ties, one with lots of scoring and one without any.

Point Loma tied Seattle Pacific (3-3) and Western Washington (0-0) in the Pacific Northwest, and used two goals from defender Milo Libby to keep them knotted with the Falcons. Academy of Art was the only team to win two matches last week, partially because goalkeeper Davis King pitched a pair of shutouts.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Point Loma’s Milo Libby, D, 6-4, 195, Soph., El Dorado Hills, Calif.
Point Loma ventured into the state of Washington and tied defending GNAC title winner Seattle Pacific (3-3) and did the same with unbeaten and No. 23 nationally ranked Western Washington (0-0). Against the Falcons, defender Milo Libby twice tallied scores, including the match-tying goal in the 87th minute. Those were the first two scores as a Sea Lion for Libby, who transferred to PLNU after a year at Gonzaga, where he started four matches for the Bulldogs.

DEFENDER OF THE WEEK: Academy of Art’s Davis King, GK, 6-1, 170, Sr., Portland, Ore.
Davis King earned a pair of shutouts as the Urban Knights won a pair of non-conference matches. The senior had two saves each against Cal Poly Humboldt (2-0) and William Jessup (3-0). The fourth-season ART U starter is tied for the conference lead with the two shutouts and has 15 total saves.

URBAN KNIGHTS GET ON THE BOARD: The PacWest Team of the Week is the Academy of Art Urban Knights. The Knights won a pair of non-conference match-ups, already equaling their win total from 2021. Davis King had two shutouts (see above) and five different ART U players scored goals. In both matches, the Urban Knights scored all of its goals in the first half and their defense limited the number of shots taken by the Lumberjacks of the CCAA and William Jessup (NAIA). The Warriors came into the ART U match with a 3-1-2 record. In their last three matches, including a 2-2 standoff with Cal State East Bay, Academy of Art is 2-0-1.

PACWEST NEWS AND NOTES: PacWest men’s soccer coaches, if they didn’t already know, will have a tough customer to deal with when Westmont joins the PacWest next year. The Warriors took out Fresno Pacific (4-0) in Montecito to improved to 4-0-1 on the season…Azusa Pacific’s tough non-conference schedule dealt them another blow as unbeaten Cal State San Bernardino topped the Cougars 1-0 on a penalty kick…Point Loma goalkeeper Seth Ketterer had five saves in the deadlock (0-0) with Western Washington to improve his PacWest-leading total to 24…Concordia took the same trip to the Pacific Northwest as Point Loma and lost to WWU (2-0) and SPU (5-1)…Last week’s Player of the Week, Kristian Colaci of Biola, scored the Eagles lone goal in Biola's only match, a 1-1 tie with Cal State San Bernardino…Dominican lost just its second match of the season to fall to 4-2 with a 2-1 loss to Sonoma State…Hawaii Pacific won its only match of the week with a 2-1 non-conference road win over rival Hawaii Hilo.

LOOKING AHEAD: PacWest teams playing each other in non-conference matches fill the slate this week. That includes Chaminade playing both Hawaii Pacific and Hawaii Hilo, while southern California teams Point Loma, Concordia, Biola and Azusa Pacific will take turns playing each other. Same goes for the northern California teams where Holy Names and Fresno Pacific will play two total matches while Dominican and Academy of Art will play once each as teams make their final preparations for league play. PacWest play starts for real on Monday (Sept. 26) when Hawaii Hilo hosts Dominican and Hawaii Pacific welcomes Academy of Art.
