Sharks Shine at Sonoma, So Does PLNU's Hernandez

Hawai`i Pacific finishes second, ahead of four other PacWest teams. Hernandez shoots even par in final round to finish third

Hawai`i Pacific tied for second with host Sonoma State in a field of Division II west region competition this week, ahead of four other PacWest squads. One of those teams, Point Loma, featured the top conference scorer in the two-day event in Kiarra Hernandez who shot 74-72 to tie for third.

Kiara Hernandez shot even par on the second day of the Sonoma State Fall Invitational to pull into a tie for third place and PacWest Player of the Week honors. She had five birdies in Tuesday's round to climb from ninth place to third to earn a all-tornament plaque. The sophomore had nine birdies overall in her final tally of 74-72 (+2) for her highest tournament finish in a Point Loma uniform.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: Hawai`i Pacific Sharks                                                                                                                            
Hawai`i Pacific was in contention for nearly all 36 holes at the Sonoma State Fall Invitational before finally settling to share the second place rung with the host Seawolves. The Sharks were the first day leaders at 293, but CS San Marcos turned in a blistering score of 290 on Tuesday to take the team crown by ten strokes. HPU's No. 4 (Kameron Kwong) and 5 (Clarissa Burnham) players on their ladder provided their top scores with a +3 tally of 147, tying for fifth place. Ellexis Mingming was at +5, Shuiyun He +8 and Lily Landt finished at +11. HPU's top four players were in the Top 20 of the tournament.

PACWEST NEWS AND NOTES: Academy of Art was the next PacWest team among the ten squads in the field, finishing fifth (605). Jae Eun Park was the Urban Knights top player, tied for 11th at +5...Point Loma's Kiara Hernandez led her team to a sixth place spot (607), with teammate Raquel Prado the Sea Lions' second scorer at +17...Dominican was seventh (618), paced by Claire Shubin's ninth place rounds of +4 (73-75)...Westmont was ninth (634), paced by Noelle Thompson's +4 score, tying with Shubin. Thompson shot a one-under 71 in the final round. 

LOOKING AHEAD: Five of the seven PacWest women's golf teams will play at the Westmont Invitational next week, October 9-10. In addition to the host Warriors, Hawai`i Hilo, Academy of Art, Dominican, and Point Loma will join the action in Goleta at the Sandpiper Golf Club.
