Sea Lions Headline Men's Tennis Awards

SURPRISE, Ariz.--Point Loma's Curt Wheeler is the Pacific West Conference Men's Tennis Coach of the Year and the Sea Lions' Alexander Leischner is the Player of the Year, announced at the championship pre-tournament banquet on Wednesday night at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Club.

Azusa Pacific's Marko Nikoliuk is the Newcomer of the Year and Alex Edmonston of Concordia is the Freshman of the Year in the ballots submitted by the conference's coaches. On Thursday, the PacWest Conference Championships begin at 1 p.m.

Wheeler led his team to a 16-2 record, the best in school history since Point Loma became an NCAA school in 2014. The head coach since 2015, Wheeler earned his first PacWest Coach of the Year honor. Point Loma is the No. 2 seed in the tourament and is ranked No. 1 in the west region. The Sea Lions had a 12-match winning streak earlier this season.

Leischner, a sophomore for the Sea Lions, went 15-3 in singles on court one and is 14-4 in doubles. He was the ITA West Region champion last fall and advanced to the national ITA semifinals. Nikoliuk, a transfer from Southern Arkansas, went 14-5 in singles while playing on each of the top three courts. He is 16-3 in doubles. Edmonston won the first six matches of his college career at postions 4-5 and is currently 9-4. In doubles, he is a perfect 10-0.

Leischner and Nikoliuk are both First Team selections, along with Biola's Alexey Prokopchuk, Point Loma's Tyler Davis, Hawaii Pacific's Robin Sanz and MSU Denver's JeanLoup Auzias. It was Prokopchuk's third All-PacWest selection, same for Davis. HPU's Benjamin Loccisano, a Second Team pick, was also honored for the third time. Nikoliuk, Davis, and Leischner were also All-First Team Doubles selections, and APU's Leyton Bohren was an All-PacWest doubles pick for the fourth time.
