LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz.--The Holy Names women's golf team saved their best for last.
In the very last Pacific West Conference golf tournament in the school's history, the Hawks won its first-ever team and individual titles. The university, which will close its doors at the end of the school year, will have to find some place to put the championship trophy.
Holy Names won the team title by six strokes over runner-up Point Loma. It was a tight grouping for the team crown, with HNU finishing at +85, followed by the Sea Lions (+91), Biola (+96), Dominican (+98), Hawaii Pacific (+99), Hawaii Hilo (+114) and Academy of Art (+117). The Hawks took a nine-shot lead into Wednesday's final round of play and then held off Point Loma and Biola. HNU turned in a scorecard of 324, while PLNU and Biola both shot 320 today.
HNU's Lavinia Romito won the last ever medalist opportunity for the school. She will be able to take her trophy home and put it on her own shelf. The Italian, who is a sophomore, will be able to show off her award as she looks to continue her college career elsewhere in 2023-24.
Romito was consistent throughout the tournament, shooting three rounds of 77 (+15). She needed every one of those good shots for the win, with the next eight players all within seven shots of the top spot. Brady Turnquist of Biola finished tied for second (+16) with a final round 75, sharing the runner-up spot with Academy of Art's Jae Eun Park.
Fourth place went to Angelica Antonio (Dominican) at +17, Ebba Wernered of Holy Names was next (+18), Hawaii Pacific's Lilly Landt followed (+19) and three Point Loma players were next on the ladder--Tabetha Kang (+20), Alii Kim (+21) and Raquel Prado (+21). Four players tied for tenth at +22.
Hawks head coach Eric Frazzetta, in his second season, has a first place trophy to speak of on his resume, after finishing second a year ago. And it's not Holy Names final match, as this win gives them the automatic qualifier berth into the NCAA West Regional Championships, May 8-10 in Dallas, Texas. Meanwhile, Point Loma, who was ranked fourth in the latest west region poll, will also likely earn an at-large berth into the regional tournament.
