Pacific West Conference champion Hawai`i Hilo placed a half dozen players on the all-conference team, while island schools claimed 12 of the 15 spots on the 2024 All-Pacific West Conference men's golf team.
UH Hilo head coach
Earl Tamiya earned the Coach of the Year honor for the second consecutive year, Academy of Art's
Giulio Zanichelli is the Golfer of the Year and Hawai`i Pacific's
Kyle Krupp was selected as the Freshman of the Year.
Those three awards were chosen by the conference's coaches, while the three All-PacWest teams are based off Clippd.com rankings.
Earl Tamiya led his Vulcan team to its second consecutive PacWest title in 2024, this time on their own Big Island. They won the title by a remarkable 14 strokes, and also for the second year in a row they could claim the individual medalist (
Nicholas Gomez). Also like 2023, Tamiya's team peaked late into the season, as prior to the conference title their best finish was a fifth place showing at the Battle in the Desert.
Giulio Zanichelli also got stronger as the season went on. The Urban Knight overcame a rough first day at the PacWest meet (80) and went on to finish third with scores of 70 and 72. He qualified for the NCAA regional tournament, where he had a career outing with a third place finish (68-70-69), just two shots off the lead. He has qualified for the NCAA Championships, which are in Orlando, Florida, May 20-25.
Kyle Krupp saved his best for last as well and finished second at the PacWest Championships. The Freshman of the Year overcame a high second round score and closed with a two-under 70 to finish at +5, just one shot behind medalist
Nicholas Gomez.
Zanichelli and Gomez are also on the First Team. Zanichelli, a junior from Italy, has the highest Clippd average by a large margin (20.49). Gomez, a senior, was the PacWest champ and is joined on the First Team by teammate
Dylan Bercan, who finished seventh at the NCAA West Regional tournament. Bercan shot a 67 on the final day and had the top score overall for the Vulcans.
Hawai`i Pacific's
Shion Suzuki and
Grant Garrison round out the First Team.
It is a young All-PacWest team in 2024, with Zanichelli as the only repeat selection from 2023. There are six freshman on the three teams, three sophomores, three juniors and three seniors.
