Sharks Sweep WG Awards

Kami Kwong wins the RCA Electric and captures first-ever HPU PacWest Player of the Week. Sharks romp to easy win at RCA for Team of the Week.

Hawai`i Pacific won the RCA Electric Invitational in Carmel by 30 shots to run away with PacWest Team of the Week honors. Kami Kwong won medalist honors by a shot over host Menlo's Kim Penzold and teammate Isabella Iorio to gain HPU's first-ever Player of the Week honors.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Hawai`i Pacific's Kami Kwong, Sr., 5-0, Torrance, Calif.                            
Hawai`i Pacific's Kami Kwong won the RCA Electric Invitational at Carmel's Quail Lodge GC this week, edging Menlo's Kim Penzold and HPU's Isabella Iorio by just one shot. Kwong led after the first round after carding a one-under score of 70, survived a second round 81 and rallied from behind for a 74 in Tuesday's final 18 holes to claim the victory at +9. The southern California native had four birdies in the first round and played consistent even par over the last nine holes of the tournament to claim the win. She is HPU's first-ever PacWest Women's Golfer of the Week. 

TEAM OF THE WEEK: Hawai`i Pacific Sharks                                                                                            
Hawai`i Pacific was the runaway winner at the RCA Electric Invitational at the Quail Lodge in Carmel. The Sharks built a 3-shot lead in the first round over fellow PacWest competitor Dominican, added another five-stroke cushion after round two and then put the hammer down on Tuesday, adding 22 insurance shots. Kami Kwong won the tournament (see above) by a shot over teammate Isabella Iorio (+10) and the Sharks had solid rounds from Shuiyun He (+12), Giuliana Rovetti (+14) and Paige Sur (+36) to win the tournament easily. Last week, the Sharks finished sixth of 12 teams at the SMU Bishop Invitational, with He leading the way at +12 (tenth place).

PACWEST NEWS AND NOTES: In Carmel, as mentioned above Menlo's Kim Penzold tied for second at +10, which included an even round of 71 in Monday's second round...Dominican's Cristen Faith Legaspi was the next non-Shark in the field at +11, which included a 71 in the first round...On the team front after HPU (895), Dominican was next (925) followed by California Lutheran (946), Menlo (960) and Jessup (974). Jessup's top golfer was Juliane Canda (+23)... In Palm Desert, Calif. at the Lady Bulldog Desert Classic, Point Loma finished second behind CS San Marcos. The Cougars were an impressive +11 over the three-round event, with the Sea Lions next at +45. Host Union TN was third (+48), Washburn KN fourth +57 and Westmont fifth at +68. Point Loma's Allie Nguyen finished in eighth (+8) with teammate Isabella Gunasayan right behind her (+11). Westmont was led by Hannah Camara at +12.

LOOKING AHEAD: The schedule is light next week, with Hawai`i Hilo and Hawai`i Pacific squaring off on Oahu for a dual match on Saturday (Oct. 4), while Jessup hosts the Grapevine Ryder Cup Dual in Sonoma on Monday.
