Point Loma's Sizzling Rounds Lead to Team/Player(s) of the Week

The Sea Lions finished second at the Pioneer Shootout behind the standout play of Summer Schafer and Isabella Gunasayan.

Point Loma earns back-to-back Team of the Week honors after an impressive second place finish at the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout. Leading the way for the Sea Lions was Summer Schafer and Isabella Gunasayan, who both had round of -3 to share Player(s) of the Week laurels.

PLAYER(S) OF THE WEEK: Point Loma’s Summer Schafer and Isabella Gunasayan                                                                  
Point Loma’s duo of Summer Schafer and Isabella Gunasayan both finished at -3 at the Pioneer Shootout to tie for fifth in a good field of 19 teams. Schafer carded rounds of 68 and 73 and Gunasayan flipped the scorecard the opposite way with a 73 followed by a 68. Gunasayan, a 5-2 junior from Arroyo Grande, had eight birdies and five bogeys over her 36 holes, and Schafer, a 5-5 freshman from San Diego had 11 birdies. Both finished just a few slots back from the tournament medalist, Zoe Garcia of Seattle Pacific (-8).

TEAM OF THE WEEK: Point Loma Sea Lions                                                                                                                                        
Point Loma earned their second straight Team of the Week honor after finishing in second place at the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout at Corica Park in Alameda. The Sea Lions (-3) were better than 17 other teams in the deep field, topped only by No. 16 nationally ranked CSU San Marcos (-13). Summer Schafer and Isabella Gunasayan led the way (see above) at -3, followed by Avery Sky’s 11th place standing (even par), and Allie Nguyen (+2). CSU San Marcos and Point Loma were the runaway champion and runner-up, with the next team on the leader board 11 shots back (CSU Los Angeles +8), followed by Simon Fraser (+12) and Western Washington (+20).

PACWEST NEWS AND NOTES: After Point Loma’s silver medal performance, the next team at the Pioneer Shootout from the PacWest was Dominican in tenth place (+30), Hawaii Pacific in 12th (+41), Jessup in 13th (+48th), Menlo in 14th (+50) and Vanguard in 16th (+56). The top PacWest golfers after Summer Schaefer and Isabella Gunasayan (see above) were Menlo’s Kim Penzold, Dominican’s Madi Whitney and Point Loma’s Avery Sky, all at even par. Jessup’s top golfer was Jessica Burdick (+3), Hawaii Pacific was led by Shuiyun He (+5) and Vanguard’s leader was Theresa Shaw (+5).

LOOKING AHEAD: Menlo will host Dominican and Hawaii Pacific (among others) on March 5-6. The following Monday-Tuesday (March 9-10), CSU Marcos is the host in Vista in a tournament that features Jessup, Point Loma, Vanguard, Hawaii Hilo and Westmont, giving another PacWest preview prior to the PacWest Championships on April 20-22, 2026 at the North Las Vegas at the Aliante Golf Club.
