Point Loma Makes Early Women's Golf Statement

The Sea Lions cruise to the LA Spring Kickoff title, topping six other PacWest teams the entire field of 13. Freshman Allie Nguyen is the individual champ after firing a 68 on the final day.

Point Loma opened up the 2026 portion of the women’s golf schedule with a statement win at the LA Spring Kickoff. The Sea Lions topped the six other PacWest schools that were in the tournament and stood atop the entire field of 13. Freshman Allie Nguyen won the event by three strokes to earn Player of the Week.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Point Loma’s Allie Nguyen, Fr., 5-5, El Macero, Calif.                                                                              
Point Loma’s Allie Nguyen stunned the LA Spring Kickoff field with a three-stroke win on Monday and Tuesday at the Rio Hondo GC in Downey. Playing in just her fourth collegiate tournament, the freshman turned in a three-round scorecard of -5, which included a sizzling score of 68 on Tuesday. Nguyen had rounds of 71 and 72 on Monday and entered the final day in a tie for first, but pulled away late with three straight birdies on holes 14-16 to win by three shots over CSU Monterey Bay’s Cathy Tong (-2). Her four-under final round of 68, which was the best of any player across the three rounds, included four birdies and no bogeys, as she led the tournament with 39 pars.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: Point Loma Sea Lions                                                                                                                                        
Point Loma cruised to the LA Spring Kickoff crown this week, topping second place CSU Monterey Bay by a whopping 18 strokes. In addition to Allie Nguyen’s red-hot tally of -5, the Sea Lions also scored very well with Isabella Gunasayan’s even round (73-70-73) total (third place), Annika Yturraide’s fourth place (+3) and Avery Sky’s +9 total. Point Loma was ten shots better than any other team on the final day and finishing the three rounds at -2. Point Loma had three players in the top four. The Sea Lions have now won at least one tournament a season for the past four years under head coach Lance Hancock.

PACWEST NEWS AND NOTES: Seven of the PacWest’s eight teams were in Downey for the LA Spring Kickoff, with Westmont the second conference team in the standings in fifth place at +61. Dominican was sixth (+64), Hawaii Hilo seventh (+68), followed by Jessup (+77), Menlo (+84) and Vanguard (+101). After Point Loma’s top three, the next PacWest golfers were Vanguard’s Theresa Shaw in eighth (+5), Jessup’s Julianne Canda and Dominican’s Avery Kraatz tied for ninth (+6), Westmont Hannah Camara in 12th (+7), Menlo’s Kim Penzold (+8) in 13th and Hilo’s Kieran Florino (+9) in 16th. 

LOOKING AHEAD: Six conference teams will be in Oakland Feb. 23-24 for the Pioneer Shootout, giving another PacWest preseason preview towards the PacWest Championships on April 20-22, 2026 in North Las Vegas at the Aliante Golf Club.
