Westmont Just Misses Title, Saludares Captures Trophy

The Warriors finished one shot behind host Westminster at the Wasatch Invitational, while Hawai`i Hilo's Kiersten Saludares wins the SMU Bishop Invitational with two rounds of even par.

Five PacWest teams hit the links in Utah this week with Westmont giving host Westminster a run for their money. The Warriors finished just one shot behind the winners and ahead of four other conference teams with a two-round tally of +35. In Washington, Hawai`i Hilo's Kiersten Saludares won the SMU Bishop Invitational with two rounds of even par 72.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Hawai`i Hilo's Kiersten Saludares, Sr., 5-2, Hilo, Hawai`i                                    
Hawai`i Hilo's Kiersten Saludares was about as even as you could be with back-to-back rounds of 72 at the SMU Bishop Invitational to win the two-day event by one stroke. Saludares had three birdies each day at The Home Course in DuPont, Wash. to capture the event by one shot over four other players tied at +1. The Hilo native set a Vulcan program record for the two-round tally of 144 on the way to winning her first title since capturing the 2024 Pacific West Conference Championship. 

TEAM OF THE WEEK: Westmont Warriors                                                                                                    
Westmont just missed winning the Westminster Wasatch Invitational title to the host Griffins, finishing one shot back with a team tally of +35. The Griffins had the top two golfers in the field in Ashley Lam and Remi Bleyl, who tied for first at +3 (Bleyl won a three-hole playoff). Westmont's Kyla Layman was just two shots back of the Westminster duo at +5, shooting rounds of 73 and 76. Sydnee Magpoc was ninth (+8), Karis Haltom was +11 and Hannah Camara rounded out the Warrior scoring with combined rounds score of +13. Haltom is the defending PacWest champion (at Biola last year) and Camara was a All-PacWest finisher. 

PACWEST NEWS AND NOTES: In South Jordan, Utah at the Wasatch Invitational, Theresa Shaw finished third, just one shot back of the leaders at +3. The Mexico native shot a 73-75 for the Vanguard Lions, one week after the former Biola star won the RJGA Shootout in Arizona...Domincan finished sixth of 11 teams, led by Cristen Faith Legaspi's 23rd place landing. She finished at +12. Menlo was eighth with Ester Otiepkova serving as the top Oaks golfer at +7 (73-78). Jessup was ninth of 11 teams with Natalie Ang the top Warrior on the links (+10). Vanguard finished tenth...In Washington, Simon Fraser won the SMU Bishop Invitational, with Hawai`i Hilo charting fourth and Hawai`i Pacific landing in sixth. SFU was at +15, Hilo was +29 and HPU +38 in the 14-team field. The next Vulcan golfers behind champion Kiersten Saludares were Kailee McKee (+7) and Jaylen Wan (+10). The Sharks were led by Shuiyun He's tenth place rounds of +6. 

LOOKING AHEAD: PacWest teams will swing right back into action next week with Point Loma and Westmont playing in Palm Desert, Calif. at the Bulldog Invitation. That will run Sunday and Monday at the Avondale Golf Club. Menlo will host Dominican, Hawai`i Pacific and Jessup on Monday and Tuesday (Sept. 29-30) in Carmel at the RCA Electric Invitational.
