Lions and Cougars Win the Week with Pair of Wins

Vanguard and Azusa Pacific win two matches in Hawaii and also claim the weekly awards. The Lions are the Team of the Week, APU's Solis is the Player of the Week and VU's Hay is the Defender of the Week.

Vanguard and Azusa Pacific ventured to Hawaii and each came away with a pair of impressive victories. The Lions beat first-place Hawaii Hilo and Hawaii Pacific, using strong defense from Defender of the Week Aiden Hay. The Cougars continued their resurgence with wins over Chaminade and the Sharks, using offense from Player of the Week Luis Solis.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Azusa Pacific's Luis Solis, MF, Sr., 5-4, 130, Fontana, Calif.                                            
Azusa Pacific's Luis Solis scored the game winning goal during a 1-0 win over Chaminade and added an assist during a Cougar win over Hawaii Pacific. Solis broke open a 0-0 deadlock in the 85 minute against the Silverswords and assisted on the go-ahead score in APU's 3-2 nail bitter against the Sharks. The senior's work helped his team improve to 3-0 in PacWest play, pushing the Cougars to their fourth straight win after a 0-5-1 start. The fourth-year Cougar, who had four goals and three assists in 2024, already has five goals in the 2025 campaign. 

DEFENDER OF THE WEEK: Vanguard's Aidan Hay, GK, Grad., 6-1, Palos Verdes, Calif.                                        
Vanguard's Aidan Hay gave up just one goal on the week as the Lions won two matches in Hawaii. The 2024 PacWest Goalkeeper of the Year had a shutout with seven saves during the 3-0 win over the Sharks and three more stops in the 2-1 victory over Hawaii Hilo. He faced 20 shots over the pair of matches. He now has a 1.00 goals against average and 26 saves on the year (0.722 save percentage). The second-year Lion, who spent his first three seasons at Division I California Baptist, leads the PacWest in GAA and in shutouts with four. 

TEAM OF THE WEEK: Vanguard Lions                                                                                                                            
Vanguard is the Team of the Week after a pair of Hawaii victories improved their PacWest record to 3-0 and their overall mark of 5-3-2. Against the conference leading Vulcans, VU put up two scores to build a lead behind shots from Luke Parker (31st) and Juan Vasquez (51st). They used three second half goals to pile on against the Sharks behind scores from Bryan Ortiz, Alex Martinez and Vasquez again. That supplemented the defensive work by Aiden Hay (see above). "We came out to Hawaii to get six points and we did it," remarked Head Coach Jesus Miramontes. "I thought we scored some great goals today (Hilo) and defended well against a solid team. Every player contributed and put in a solid shift. It was a great ending to a tough trip."

PACWEST NEWS AND NOTES: Point Loma won its lone match of the week with a 3-2 road victory at Concordia. The Sea Lions scored three times in the first 54 minutes and then held on as the Golden Eagles scored twice last in the match. PLNU improved to 6-2-1 on the year and to 2-0 in conference play, winning their fourth straight...Concordia's Ryan Smith scored one of CUI's goals against Point Loma and also deposited a score in a 2-0 win over Jessup...Jose Garcia scored in the 81st minute to lead Menlo to a 2-1 victory over Westmont in a battle of top PacWest teams...The Warriors rebounded with a 2-1 triumph over Fresno Pacific in a rematch of the 2024 PacWest tournament title match, using eight saves from keeper Aidan Strickler...Chaminade's Jonah Valmonte had 14 saves on the week, including nine during a 1-1 tie with Biola...The unbalanced PacWest schedule makes it a bit wonky to decifer much about the PacWest standings, but here is where we are at in mid-October. Hawaii Hilo 3-2-1 (10 points), Vanguard 3-0 (9), Azusa Pacific 3-0 (9), Concordia 3-1 (9), Fresno Pacific 3-1 (9), Point Loma 2-0 (6), Menlo 2-2 (6), Hawaii Pacific 2-3 (6). 

LOOKING AHEAD: 11 matches dot the slate, with eight conference matches and three non-conference kick offs. On Wednesday, Jessup is at Fresno Pacific (non-conference), Vanguard is at Concordia, Point Loma at Biola and Westmont is at Azusa Pacific. on Thursday, Hawaii Pacific is at Hilo (non-conference), and Saturday's full slate includes Hilo at Chaminade (non-conference), Dominican at Jessup, Vanguard at Point Loma, Fresno Pacific at Menlo, Biola at Westmont and Azusa Pacific at Concordia.  To see the complete list, click here.
