Eagles, Sharks and Oaks Earn MSOC Awards

Biola tops Toros and Cougars, HPU banks on Takara's goals and Menlo relies on Fiala's save ability.

Biola was impressive with a 3-0 win over CS Dominguez Hills and Hawai`i Pacific's Kelly Takara led the Sharks with a pair of goals, one of them against rival Chaminade. Menlo continues to impress in the early season behind goalkeeper Martin Fiala's steady work.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Hawai`i Pacific's Kelly Takara, F, Jr., 6-1, Aiea, Hawai`i                                                        
Hawai`i Pacific's Kelly Takara scored a goal in each of HPU's matches to help the Sharks to a 1-0-1 mark, tied with Biola for the best record on the week. Takara scored the only goal of the match in a non-conference bout with rival Chaminade, finding the back of the net just six minutes into the bout. It turned out to be the game winner and his only shot of the match. A few days later against UC Colorado Springs, the Oahu native scored early again for HPU's only score, this time just eight minutes into an eventual 1-1 tie. On the season, Takara has four of the Shark's eight goals in five matches. 

DEFENDER OF THE WEEK: Menlo's Martin Fiala, GK, Sr., 6-0, Slavetin, Czech Republic                                        
Menlo's Martin Fiala helped his Oaks team continue their impressive start with solid defensive work in the goal. The Czech Republic native allowed just one goal on the week, that during Menlo's first loss of the season, a narrow 1-0 decision against No. 2 nationally ranked Stanilsaus State. He also directed a shutout against Chico State and for the week totaled seven saves. On the season, the 2024 All-PacWest Second Team selection has 24 saves in six matches and a 1.33 goals against average.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: Biola Eagles                                                                                                                                    
Biola is the Team of the Week after an impressive 3-0 win over CS Dominguez Hills and a 1-1 tie with CS San Marcos. On Saturday night under the lights at home, the Eagles scored three times in the second half to break a scoreless tie to grab the win. They scored first earlier in the week during a tie with the Cougars in route to a 1-1 deadlock. Brennan Furlan scored in each match for the Eagles, who are now 2-2-2 on the season. "Tonight was an important statement win for us," said head coach Joey O'Keefe after the win over the Toros. "Coming off back to back-to-back games where we were leading 1-0 and then did not get the win, the team was hungry to prove that we could close out matches, especially here at home."

PACWEST NEWS AND NOTES: Dominican's Colin Nestor had eight saves in the Penguins' 4-1 win over Chico State...Menlo lost a tight one to Stanislaus State for their first loss of the season, but bounced back with a win over Chico, capitalizing on Giuseppe Sigala's goal in the 82nd minute in the 1-0 win. The Oaks are now 5-1 and ranked No. 19 in the national poll....Biola's Brennan Furlan had a goal in each match as the Eagles swamped CSU Dominguez Hills 3-0 and tied CSU San Marcos...Westmont took out CSU San Marcos in their only match of the week, 2-1, with goals from Erik Guerrero and Serkan Durna...Fresno Pacific lost a heartbreaker to No. 8 ranked CS San Bernardino 3-2. The Sunbirds rallied back from a 3-0 deficit with second half scores from Phillip Rico (75th minute) and Lucas Ribeiro (80th), but came up just short...Menlo leads the pack in non-conference matches at 5-1, followed by unbeaten Hawaii Pacific (3-0-2), Westmont (3-1-1), Biola (2-2-2), Point Loma (2-2-1) and Vanguard (2-2-1).

LOOKING AHEAD: 14 matches dot the schedule this week, including six games that will count in the PacWest standings.
