PacWest preseason favorite showed well in their season openers, taking down CCAA powers CSU Dominguez Hills and CSU San Bernardino. Dominican also went 2-0 led by Darius Best who put up 30 against Cal Poly Humboldt. Defensively, Concordia’s Nick Corbett was a rebound machine for the unbeaten Golden Eagles.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Dominican’s Darius Best, G, 6-2, 185, Sr., Charlotte, N.C.
Dominican’s Darius Best averaged 23 points a game to help the Penguins to a 2-0 start with impressive wins over San Francisco State and Cal Poly Humboldt. Best had 30 points against the Lumberjacks and added 16 more against the Gators on perfect 5-of-5 shooting. Best also averaged 3.5 steals a contest as the Penguins blasted SF State 96-66 and Cal Poly Humboldt 89-61.
DEFENDER OF THE WEEK: Concordia’s Nick Corbett, F/C, 6-7, 235, Soph., San Jose, Calif.
Concordia’s Nick Corbett was a stopper in his Golden Eagle debut to help his new team to a pair of victories. The 6-foot-7 inside player totaled 26 rebounds in the games against CS San Marcos and CSU Los Angeles and also averaged 10.5 points a contest. Corbett, a transfer from Skyline CC, had a double-double against CSU Los Angeles with 15 and 14, shooting 7-of-11 from the field. The San Jose native shot .714 over the two games to push his team to a 2-0 start.
TEAM OF THE WEEK: Point Loma, the defending PacWest champs and preseason favorite didn’t skip a beat in beating two of the top teams in the CCAA. The Sea Lions raced past CS Dominguez Hills 90-82 and CS San Bernardino 87-66 in games played at Vanguard. The Toros were the preseason pick to win the CCAA and are ranked No. 12 nationally. The ‘Yotes, long a conference and regional power, is picked third in their league this year.
Andrew Nagy had a 12-13 double-double against CSUSB and put up 24 versus CSUDH.

Concordia’s Marcellus Edwards averaged 16.5 points and shot 65 percent from the field in CUI’s two wins…
