Sharks Win Three Against GNAC Schools

Hawaii Pacific, led by Quentin Meza, won in the states of Alaska and Hawaii in the same week. Concordia'a Nick Corbett pulled down a PacWest season best of 15 rebounds for back-to-back Defender of the Week titles.

Hawaii Pacific went 3-0 against teams from the Great Northwest Athletic Conference last week, to improve to 3-1 on the season. Quentin Meza was a big part of that Shark success averaging 20 points a game. For the second straight week, Concordia’s Nick Corbett was a rebounding force, this time pulling down 15 against Cal Poly Pomona.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Hawaii Pacific’s Quentin Meza, G, 6-0, Jr., West Valley, Utah                       
Hawaii Pacific’s Quentin Meza averaged 20 points over a trio of games as the Sharks beat Alaska Fairbanks, St. Martin’s and Western Washington of the GNAC. The Idaho State transfer put up 23 against Western Washington, 22 in an overtime win over Alaska and had 15 versus St. Martin’s. The Utah native shot 57 percent from the floor (23-40) and hit 7-of-18 three-pointers. He was a sizzling 9-of-11 against the Nanooks. Meza also had 11 rebounds, 10 assists and 5 steals.
 
DEFENDER OF THE WEEK: Concordia’s Nick Corbett, F/C, 6-7, 235, Soph, San Jose, Calif.               
Concordia’s Nick Corbett is the back-to-back winner of the Defender of the Week award. In a two-point loss to unbeaten Cal Poly Pomona, the San Jose native pulled down a PacWest season-best 15 rebounds, nine of them on the defensive end of the court. Corbett had five more rebounds in a 75-66 victory over CSU San Bernardino, and is now averaging 11.5 boards a contest to lead the PacWest. He also had 10 points in each game, shooting a sizzling 7-of-9 from the floor.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: Hawaii Pacific grabbed three wins last week, beginning the week in Alaska (Sunday) before finishing it up at home against St. Martin’s and Western Washington. The Sharks went extra time to defeat the Nanooks 86-85, before beating perennial GNAC powers St. Martin’s (88-75) and Western Washington (86-71) at home.
 
PACWEST NEWS AND NOTES: Point Loma moved to 4-0 on the year with wins over CSU San Marcos (75-61) and Stanton (101-67). The Sea Lions are the only unbeaten team in the conference after two weeks of play…Five teams are 3-1—Biola, Concordia, Dominican, Hawaii Pacific and VanguardAidan Mandel of Westmont hit for 30 points against Simon Fraser…Biola’s Tyus Parrish-Tillman has impressive stat lines in Eagle wins over CSU Dominguez Hills and Stanton. Against the Toros, the NCAA runner-up a year ago, Parrish-Tillman had 23 points with 13-of-14 free throw shooting. He hit on 7-of-11 shots against Stanton for 18 points…Two PacWest players had nine assists in a game last week—Roland Banks of Chaminade against Western Washington and Devon Woods of Menlo against Stanton…Menlo’s JaMaal Unuakhalu averaged 20.5 points a game, shooting .580 from the floor.
