Penguins Point to Upset Win and Two Awards

Dominican went to Point Loma and planted a 19-point loss on the Sea Lions to earn Team of the Week and Player of the Week (Nick Medeiros). Westmont's Aidan Mandel is the Defender of the Week after dominent work in a win over Biola.

Dominican served notice to the rest of the Pacific West Conference with a 19-point win over Point Loma in San Diego. Guard Nick Medeiros played a huge role in that victory with 27 points and a stat sheet full of numbers. Westmont’s Aidan Mandel had nine rebounds, six blocked shots and four steals in a big Warrior win over Biola.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Dominican’s Nick Medeiros, G, 5-11, 160, Sr., Vallejo, Calif.                       
Domincan’s Nick Medeiros had the best game of his young Penguin career, and it came at just the right time during a 92-73 upset of Point Loma in San Diego. The first-year Penguin and former Sonoma State player had 27 points 12 rebounds, six assists and a pair of steals in the stunning win. The 5-11 guard had nine defensive rebounds, hit 10 of 16 shots from the field and had just one turnover on the day. While he has scored in double figures in six of DUC’s seven games, he hadn’t scored over 20 points in a game yet and his previous best was 17.
 
DEFENDER OF THE WEEK: Westmont’s Aidan Mandel, G, 6-8, Jr., Santa Barbara, Calif.               
Westmont’s Aidan Mandel won his second PacWest Defender of the Week award in the last two weeks with another all-around big game. The Warriors used Mandel’s six blocked shots, nine rebounds, and four steals to take out Biola, 72-61 to improve to 2-1 in conference play. The Santa Barbara native also scored 22 points on 9-of-13 shooting, including 4 of 5 from three-point range. Mandel, who came off the bench last year for the Warriors, is averaging 11.6 points and 8.8 rebounds a game thus far in 2025-26.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: The Dominican Penguins pulled off the upset of the young season this past week in San Diego, topping #10 nationally ranked Point Loma 92-73 at Golden Gym. Dominican won their PacWest opener by taking a 39-30 halftime lead and lengthening it in the second half with 53 points after the break. The Penguins improved to 6-1 overall behind Nick Medeiros’s big game (see above). the excellent play of Darius Best (26 points) and Michael Wilson who had nine points, eight rebounds and four steals. It was Dominican’s first win over a Top 10 team since 2014 and the victory snapped a 15-game losing string against the Sea Lions.
 
PACWEST NEWS AND NOTES: Point Loma topped Biola earlier in the week (74-70) before the loss to Dominican. The Sea Lions improved to 8-1 overall and 3-0 in conference play behind Andrew Nagy’s 18 points and 13 rebounds. Cameron Brown had a monster game for the Eagles with 28 points and eight boards…In Westmont’s 72-61 win over Biola, Braedon Bigott had 12 points, six rebounds and seven assists…Hawaii Pacific defeated Hawaii Hilo 80-74, taking a big early lead of 38-22 at the half and then surviving a 51-point Vulcan second half. Jamal Entezami had 23 points off the bench for Hilo while Joshua West had 20 points to lead the Sharks.
