PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Biola’s Kendall Vandertuig, OH, Sr., 6-0, Tulare, Calif.
Biola’s Kendall Vandertuig helped her team to a pair of victories to push the Eagles to 5-2 in PacWest play, currently good for fifth place. The 6-foot outside hitter had 26 kills in a five-set non-conference win over Concordia, equaling her season high which she put up against Westmont earlier this season (and also won Player of the Week). The fifth-year Eagle hit .420 in the match against the Golden Eagles and also had 11 digs. Additionally, she posted a double-double in a four-set win over Westmont, totaling 15 kills and 13 digs. The Tulare native is averaging 3.69 kills per set, second best in the PacWest.
DEFENDER OF THE WEEK: Fresno Pacific’s Devyn Castaneda, L-DS, Soph., 5-6, Visalia, Calif.
Fresno Pacific’s Devyn Castaneda played a big defensive role in two more wins for the Sunbirds. FPU improved to 20-0 on the season and 8-0 in the PacWest with 3-0 sweeps of Dominican and Hawaii Pacific. Against the Penguins, the sophomore libero had 21 digs in just three sets and she added 11 more against the Sharks for a 5.33 digs per set average. The 21 digs was her third highest total for the season and a career high for a 3-set match. On the year, the second-year Sunbird averages 4.07 digs per set, which ranks fifth in the PacWest.
TEAM OF THE WEEK: Biola Eagles
Biola is the Team of the Week after two gigantic wins kept them in the postseason hunt. In a 3-2 win over Concordia, the Eagles trailed 2-1 before rallying back for 25-20 and 15-7 wins in sets four and five.
Kendall Vandertuig (see above) had 26 kills and hit .420 to pace the offense and
Payton Tully added 15 kills.
Bri Fellfi had 23 digs on defense against Westmont and 17 versus Concordia. That win came one night after a hard fought 3-1 win over Westmont, which bumped them to 5-2 in PacWest matches. That puts them just one half-match behind Hawaii Hilo for that coveted fourth spot in the PacWest tournament race. The Eagles are now 15-7 overall under second-year head coach
Brian Fallinger.
