Azusa Pacific’s Audrey Sayoc scored a career high 28 points and had seven steals during APU’s 72-65 victory over defending conference champion Point Loma. The local product hit five treys during the game and had the go-ahead basket in the final two minutes. For the week, the fourth-year Cougar had 52 points, 13 steals and 14 assists to help the Cougars move to 3-1 in PacWest play and 7-4 overall. The veteran guard is third in the conference in three-point percentage (.389) and is fourth in assists (4.6) and steals (4.0).
DEFENDER OF THE WEEK: Dominican’s Keyonee Neal, G, Sr., 5-10, Rohnert Park, Calif.
Dominican’s Keyonee Neal is the Defender of the Week, helping lead the Penguins to a 2-1 week. The fourth-year Penguin starter, who was the 2023 PacWest Freshman of the Year, had 16 rebounds in a loss to Concordia and pulled down 12 more with five blocked shots in a win over Menlo. For the week, Neal had 35 rebounds, seven blocked shots and five steals, to go with 41 points on offense.
TEAM OF THE WEEK: Azusa Pacific is the Team of the Week after going 3-0 with wins over Chaminade (91-55), Alaska (82-50) and Point Loma (72-65). In the victory over the Sea Lions, the Cougars trailed by 11 points in the first half before
Audrey Sayoc (see above) scored nine straight points, leading to a back-and-forth finish.
Rachel Roderick had a double-double with 12 points and 12 boards, and the Cougars hit 10 of 22 three point attempts. They also forced the Sea Lions into 24 turnovers. It was APU’s 11
th win in their last 13 outings against Point Loma.
Lauren Jones hit seven treys against Chaminade, a PacWest season high, and Roderick had 18 points and nine rebounds against Alaska. Picked to finish fifth in the PacWest preseason poll, the Cougars under first-year coach
Dan Ploog are now 7-4 overall and 3-1 in conference play.
