Mavericks Go 3-0 in Arizona, Penguins Clip Urban Knights

Deepa Vanaraja wins twice and clinches in DUC's 4-3 win over ART U for Player of the Week. Colorado Mesa wins three for Team of the Week

Dominican went the distance in a thrilling 4-3 win over defending PacWest champ Academy of Art, with Deepa Vanaraja picking up a doubles win and the singles clincher. Colorado Mesa went unbeaten in Arizona to claim Team of the Week.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Dominican's Deepa Vanaraja, Jr., Chennai, India                                            
Dominican's Deepalakshmi Vanaraja played a big role in the Penguins' upset of Academy of Art on Monday (Feb. 17). The junior first teamed with Sofia Acuna on court two for a 6-1 doubles victory over Estelle Najean and Paulina Alvarez, although the Penguins lost the team doubles point. Then, in the final match of the day on singles court four, Vanaraja took out Alvarez 6-4, 6-2 to break the 3-3 tie and give DUC the road win. With the team victory, the former Holy Names player helped Dominican improve to 3-1 overall, with wins over ART U, Fresno Pacific and Menlo. The Penguins' lone loss was to Division I Pacific.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: Colorado Mesa Mavericks                                                                                       
Colorado Mesa could call their Arizona trip a big success, winning all three matches to improve to 5-4 on the season. The Mavericks took out Western New Mexico (4-0), Arizona Christian (5-2) and Ottawa (4-1). Freshman Catalina Ballon Marin went 3-0 in singles on the road trip on court five, and was 2-1 in doubles play on court three. Jada Brillhante was 2-0 in singles (#4) and 2-0 in doubles (#1), while Makenna Livingston was unbeaten in two matches each on court one (singles) and court two (doubles). 

PACWEST NEWS AND NOTES: Biola went 2-0 last week with wins over CS Los Angeles (5-2) and Westmont (7-0) to improve to 4-0 on the season...Defending PacWest champ Azusa Pacific moved to 5-0 with a 7-0 win over Hope International...Concordia is 3-1 after defeating Cal Tech (6-1)...In the first ITA team rankings (mid January), Azusa Pacific was listed No. 21 and Academy of Art checks in at No. 22. In singles, ART U has Amelija Supulniece at #15, Estelle Najean at #32 and Jessica Plazas at #43. Sophie Rachor of Concordia is #18 and Dominican's Audrey Rafols is #27. In doubles, the Point Loma duo of Arianna Audelo and Quin Brady are #8, Azusa Pacific's Julia Jordan and Vini Bautista are #20 and ART U's Plazas and Sofia Pavlova are #25...In that Dominican win over Academy of Art, #27 Rafols topped #15 Supulniece in the featured match of the day on court one, 6-4, 6-2.
