Urban Knights and a Oak Earn Women's Golf Awards

Academy of Art finishes second at SMSU Spring Invite, while Menlo's Obermuller wins Regals Invite, riding first round 69.

Academy of Art finished second of 12 teams at the SMSU Spring Invite in Arizona to earn Team of the Week honors. Menlo's Holly Obermuller won the CLU Regals Invite, shooting a 69 on opening day.

Menlo's Holly Obermuller won medalist honors at the seven-team CLU Regals Invitational earlier this week at the Moorpark Country Club, also helping lead her Oaks team to the tournament trophy. The senior from Germany fired a 69 on the first day, with five birdies, four bogeys and an eagle. On day two, she had to battle through some challenges but fought to a round of 78 that included three birdies and seven bogeys. It was the first win of the season for Obermuller, who was the Golden State Athletic Conference tournament runner-up in 2024.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: Academy of Art Urban Knights                                                                                    
Academy of Art probably surprised a few golf followers with their second place finish at the SMSU Spring Invitational at the Wigwam in Litchfield Park, Arizona. The Urban Knights finished ahead of 11 other Division II teams at +22, and only looked up at Grand Valley State (+1), the No. 6 ranked team in the nation. It was ART U's best result of the spring season, and it featured four golfers within a stroke of each other on the final day. Isabella Christy and Janelle Calixterio led ART U over the 36 holes with a +4 score, tied for seventh place. Meritzell Illamola was the next Urban Knight at +6 (74-75), with Nicole Yang to follow at +11. On Tuesday, the Urban Knights had Calixterio at 75, with Christy, Illamola and Yang at 76. 

PACWEST NEWS AND NOTES: Biola finished ahead of three other PacWest teams at the Fujikura Invitational in Vista. Host CS San Marcos won the tournament at +32, with the Eagles claiming the sixth spot of 14 teams at +56. Hawai`i Pacific (+79) was eighth, Point Loma tied for 12 (+109) and Hawaii Hilo was 14th (+169). Biola's Claire Shubin was the top conference golfer in the field at +11 (71-80-76), tied for tenth. BU's Theresa Shaw (16) and Karis Haltom (+17) were next in the conference order, followed by Hawaii Pacific's Shuiyyn He (+18). Point Loma's top placers were Mallory Hopper and Zara Houghton (+27), while Hawaii Hilo was led by Kiersten Saludares (+27)...In Moorpark, Menlo in first in the seven-team field at +63. Holly Obermuller won the event at +3, with Menlo's next golfer on the leaderboard in fourth overall was Rori Fanning (+13).

LOOKING AHEAD: Action continues this week on Thursday-Friday in Palm Desert where Westmont, Vanguard and Hawai`i Hilo will play at the Augustana Spring Fling. Next week, Academy of Art and Biola will tackle at talented field at No. 1 nationally ranked Dallas Baptist's tournament in Carmel.
