Hilo's Paquet and Point Loma Win Men's Tennis Awards

Sea Lions win two and give #4 Lubbock Christian a battle. Vulcan Jaime Paquet wins two matches on court one against PLNU and CUI.

Point Loma worked around the rain to defeat Augustana and Hawai`i Hilo, and then suffered a 5-2 loss to #4 nationally ranked Lubbock Christian on Monday. The Vulcans may have lost to the Sea Lions, but Jaime Paquet won his match on court one in San Diego and at Concordia.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Hawai`i Hilo's Jaime Paquet, Soph., 5-7, Asturias, Spain                                
Hawai`i Hilo's Jaime Paquet won his third and fourth matches in a row on court one for the Vulcans during Hilo's southern California trip. Yesterday (Monday), he rallied back to defeat Concordia's Spencer Cinco by the score of 6-7 (6-8), 6-4, 6-1. On Saturday, the Spain native provided one of UH Hilo's two wins against Point Loma with a 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) triumph over Niclas Goltz. Prior to those wins, Paquet won back-to-back singles matches against No. 27 ranked Colorado Mesa. Four of his eight singles matches have gone three sets, and he is 3-1 in those matches. Paquet sat out 2024 with an injury, and as a freshman in 2023 at Division I Tennessee Tech he started in both singles and doubles for the Golden Eagles.*EDITOR'S NOTE: Pacquet also topped APU's Elias Walter in three sets today (Tuesday), 7-5, 3-6, 6-4, making him 4-1 in three set matches this year (after he had already been chosen POW).

TEAM OF THE WEEK: Point Loma Sea Lions                                                                                                
Point Loma won two matches during a rain shortened week, defeating Augustana (6-1) and Hawaii Hilo (5-2). Against the Vikings, the Sea Lions won the doubles points and their five singles matches in straight sets. It was tougher against the Vulcans, where Elias Weeks had to go three sets on court six and Andrew Suver survived a second set tiebreaker. Against No. 4 ranked Lubbock Christian, who is 13-1 on the season, Point Loma won a doubles match on court two with Niclas Goltz and Nabeel Khan winning, 6-1, and the court three crew of Weeks and Finn Kirschner barely lost at 7-6 (7-4). Kirschner and Weeks went on to win their singles matches on courts five and six to push one of the top teams in the country. Kirschner is 9-0 in singles this season. The Sea Lions are now 7-3 overall and 5-2 against teams from the PacWest. 

ITA NATIONAL RANKINGS: Azusa Pacific is ranked No. 7 in the latest ITA national poll (March 12), with another poll coming out tomorrow (Wednesday, March 19). Colorado Mesa is No. 29, Concordia is No. 36, Fresno Pacific is 37 and Hawaii Hilo is 45.  The second singles ranking of the spring also came out, with this list of PacWest players: (22) Soeren Grandke (Azusa Pacific), (30) Lluc Limongi Ollers (MSU-Denver), (34) Elias Emilio Walter (APU), (44) Mihi Velicki (APU), (69) Finn Kirshner (Point Loma) and (75) Alejandro Jimenez Gomes (MSU Denver). PacWest players ranked in doubles are (24) Walter-Grandke (APU), (27) Marco Jalalian-Alessandro Munoz (MSU Denver), (43) Ben Cronau-Sven Bangert (Fresno Pacific, and (44) Felix Veyhle-Max Mueller (Concordia).

PACWEST NEWS AND NOTES: Seven matches were cancelled last week because of rain in southern California…Before they departed the mainland, Hawai`i Pacific picked up a 4-3 win over Biola to wrap up their California trip. The Sharks won the doubles point and then took the top two singles courts, with Adam Vasir clinching on court two with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 win over BU’s Patricio LarreraConcordia took down Western New Mexico (4-0) and Hawaii Hilo (4-3), two teams ranked in the ITA Top 50. For the win over the Vulcans, which was tied at 3-3 for parts of two days, Oleksandr Kolesynchenko clinched earlier today on court six with a three set win after the overnight rain delay…Azusa Pacific had an epic encounter with No. 4 ranked Lubbock Christian, leading at one point 3-1 before falling 4-3. Elias Walter played on court one and defeated the No. 19 ranked player in the country in Pablo Segura…Biola swept Colorado Mesa, 7-0…Despite losing the doubles point and top two singles courts, Menlo defeated Westmont 4-3, in a rematch of a bout that finished the same way in February (4-3). Duarte Brito clinched for the Oaks on court six, 6-7, 6-3, 7-5 over Owen Vander Ark…The Warriors were the hard luck losers with another 4-3 loss to Colorado Mesa on Monday…While PacWest standings are not kept for men’s or women’s tennis, results against fellow PacWest teams weigh heavily on the seedings for the conference tournament in Surprise, Ariz., April 16-19. Teams with winning records overall include Concordia (11-2), Azusa Pacific (10-2), Point Loma (7-3), Fresno Pacific (5-4), Colorado Mesa (8-7), and Menlo (3-1).

THIS WEEK: It's busy, including some make-up games and others that were already on the schedule. Colorado Mesa wraps up its west coast trip with matches against Fresno Pacific, Menlo, Jessup and Azusa Pacific. Hawaii Hilo continues its mainland trip to take on APU, Biola, FPU and Jessup.
