SURPRISE, Ariz.--A pair of familiar names from a very good team highlight the 2025 Pacific West Conference All-PacWest Men's Tennis Team.
Azusa Pacific head coach
Mark Bohren is the repeat winner as Coach of the Year and Cougar
Elias Emilio Walter wins back-to-back Player of the Year honors. Fellow APU standout
David James Brownlee was selected by the conference's coaches as the Freshman of the Year.
Hawai`i HIlo's Jaime Paquet broke through the Cougar brigade for Newcomer of the Year honors. The announcements were made tonight (Wednesday) at the PacWest Championships tournament banquet at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Center.
Elias Emilio Walter had another outstanding season to gain his second Player of the Year honor. Walter won the ITA Fall West Regional and then went 16-2 in singles in the spring, playing all of his matches at the No. 1 position. He leads the PacWest in singles winning percentage at No. 1 singles, and he went 3-0 against nationally-ranked opponents. He went 12-1 in singles against PacWest players in the spring.
Mark Bohren helped Azusa Pacific go undefeated in the regular season against conference teams, extending the Cougars' winning streak against the PacWest to 35 wins in a row (second longest in conference history). He reached 600 career wins in the middle of his 30th season for an average of 20 wins per season (604-161). This was his 19th career 20-win season. He was also named the PacWest Women's Coach of the Year.
David James Brownlee had a very impressive freshman season. Brownlee recorded a 15-5 record in singles, playing no lower than the No. 4 position. He went 8-3 in singles matches against PacWest opponents, and he won against Washburn's Pavlos Parson who was ranked No. 33 at the time (now ranked No. 52). The local product from Claremont also went 12-7 in doubles in his first season as a Cougar.
Hawai`i Hilo's
Jaime Paquet made a splash in his first season as a Vulcan. After sitting out 2024 at Hilo with an injury, the Tennessee Tech transfer got on a hot streak after a 2-2 start. He reeled off 12 wins in a row on court one and finished the regular season at 14-3. Nine of his 17 matches went three sets, and he went 7-2 in those bouts. His victories came over many of the top players in the conference (including APU's Walter). The native of Spain is currently ranked No. 51 nationally.
Walter and Paquet were First Team selections, along with
Soeren Grandke (APU),
Spencer Cinco (Concordia),
Alejandro Flores Monteverde (Biola) and
Mile Matic (Hawaii Pacific).
Walter is a four-time All-PacWest selection in both singles and doubles, and Third Team pick
Alexander Leischner (Point Loma) was selected for the third time.
The PacWest men's championships begins tomorrow (Thursday) at 1 pm. For more tournament information, including results and Live stats, go to the tournament page by
