Sharks Have Short Lead Over Vulcans, 4 Players Tied for First

The first day of the PacWest Golf Championships features island schools Hawaii Pacific and Hawaii Hilo on top of the leaderboard. Four players share the top of the medalist list with 36 holes to play.

NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev.--Hawai`i Pacific and Hawai`i Hilo, who have combined to win the last three Pacific West Conference men's golf championships, are the two leaders after the first day in 2025 at the Aliante Golf Club. 

Hawaii Pacific has a two shot lead over the Vulcans after recording a first round team score of -6 (Hawaii Hilo is -4). Their early lead, with two more rounds to be played Tuesday and Wednesday, is sizable over third place Menlo (+5) and Academy of Art (+6). 

Play continues Tuesday and Wednesday at 7 a.m.

Hawaii Hilo, the two-time defending champs, have two players sharing the top of the leaderboard. Dylan Bercan and Katsuhiro Yamashita turned in -4 scorecards with 68's. Joining them after 18 holes is Hawaii Pacific's Fisher Ransom and Menlo's Paul Hautbourg with 68's as well.

That foursome got to 68 in different ways. Hautbourg had three birdies to close out his front nine. Bercan was the most consistent with four total birdies and no bogeys. Ranson had six birds and two bogeys and Yamashita had the most dramatic round with seven birdies, a double bogey and a bogey.

Rounding out the top ten was HPU's Rico See (-2), Giulio Zanichelli of Academy of Art (-1), Vanguard's Kyle Koski (-1), HPU's Kyle Krupp (-1), Dominican's Daniel Marmorstein (even) and Michael Sorber from Jessup (even).

In the team title chase, the Sharks had the trio of Ransom, See and Krupp, and Miles Atkinson rounded out their team score with a 73 (+1). For Hilo, Bercan and Yamashita were joined by Jacob Torres (+1) and Ben Crinella (+3) for their team score of -4.
