NORTH LAS VEGAS--Hawai`i Hilo flew out of the gates with a torrid start to their third round and parlayed that into the 2025 Pacific West Conference Men's Golf Championship, their third straight.
The Vulcans had eight birdies in their first six holes to overcome the 2-shot deficit that they entered the day with. They flipped that into a ten-shot lead by the ninth hole and won going away. It is Hawaii Hilo's sixth all-time men's golf title, the most of any team in PacWest history surpassing Grand Canyon University's previous best of five trophies.
All six of those titles have come under the helm of head coach
Earl Tamiya, who is in his 34th season of leading the program.
All four of UH Hilo's scorers were under par for the front nine. There were 11 total birdies by that group of four, and also an eagle by
Dysen Park.
The wind picked up on the back nine, cooling off the final scores. Still, the Vulcans were able stay on top with a +6 score on the back nine to win the title by eight strokes.
The fight for the medalist trophy included a player that was in the clubhouse for the final hour.
Michael Sorber of Jessup finished his round before the team leaders came in, so he was sitting at -7 awaiting the final results. When
Dylan Bercan also
finished at -7, the pair headed to the10th tee for a sudden death playoff.
Sorber went right of the cart path with his drive but recovered with a great shot to the green about 20 yards away from the pin. Meanwhile Bercan hit his drive about 385 yards into a bunker at the front of the green. He then flopped his sand shot withint four feet of the pin and tapped in his putt for a birdie and the win.
Bercan's tite gives the Vulcans three straight medalists to go with their three consecutive team crowns.
Jessup followed the Vulcans and Sharks in third place (+23). Academy of Art was next (+24) in fifth. Rounding out the field was Vanguard (+42), Dominican (+47), Westmont (+61) and Chaminade (+65).
Top 10 individual plaque winners after Bercan and Sorber were Hawaii Pacific's
Fisher Ransom (-6), Hilo's
Katsuhiro Yamashita (-5), Academy of Art's
Giulio Zanichelli (-1), Westmont's
Ryan Brady (E), Menlo's
Paul Hautbourg (E), HPU's
Kyle Krupp (+1), Vanguard's
Alex Elia (+2), Hilo's
Jacob Torres (+2) and Dominican's
Jarred Scott (+2).
