Familiar Faces Populate PacWest Awards

Hawai`i Hilo's Earl Tamiya is the PacWest Coach of the Year for the third year in a row, while Academy of Art's Giulio Zanichelli is the Golfer of the Year for the second straight season. Jessup newcomer Michael Sorber is the Freshman of the Year.

There is a lot that looks familiar with the 2025 All-Pacific West Conference men’s golf team and special awards.

For the third year in a row, Hawai`i Hilo’s Earl Tamiya is the Coach of the Year. Academy of Art’s Giulio Zanichelli is the PacWest Golfer of the Year for the second straight season, and nine of the 15 members of the First, Second or Third All-PacWest Team are repeat selections.

Jessup's Michael Sorber is the PacWest Freshman of the Year.

Earl Tamiya led his Vulcan team to the 2025 Pacific West Conference title and to the NCAA West Regional tournament. That marked the third straight season that Hawai`i Hilo has won the conference crown, and they finished second the two seasons prior to that.

This year Tamiya’s squad turned a two-shot Tuesday deficit into an eight-stroke cushion on Wednesday to hoist the championship trophy again. It marks the first time that a team has won the PacWest crown three seasons in a row. The 83-year-old Tamiya has been coaching the Vulcan squad since 1991.

Giulio Zanichelli is the PacWest Golfer of the Year again after another outstanding season in Academy of Art’s final year of competition (they are eliminating athletics this June). The Italian had the top stroke average in the conference at 72.4 and finished the year ranked No. 11 in the NCAA West Region.

Zanichelli finished second at two tournaments this year (Chico and Western Washington), was fourth at St. Martin’s tournament and was sixth at the Otter Invitational. He was fifth at the PacWest Championships, and wrapped up his career at the NCAA Regional Championships with three birdies in his final four holes for a 71.

Conference newcomer Jessup has the PacWest Freshman of the Year, Michael Sorber. The Placerville native was red hot at the PacWest Championships shooting 68 and 69 the final two days to finish at -7 and tied with Hawaii Hilo’s Dylan Bercan for first. A one-hole sudden death playoff gave the title to Bercan with a birdie, but Sorber bested the rest of the field in his first try.

Sorber’s play helped Jessup finish third in the tournament. The true freshman finished with a 72.8 stroke average and is ranked No. 22 in the NCAA West Region. Earlier this year he finished third at Stanislaus State’s tournament, fourth at the PCH and fifth at the RJCA.

Zanichelli earned All-PacWest honors for the third time. He was joined on the First Team by Hawai`i Hilo’s Bercan and Katsuhiro Yamashita, along with Sorber and Hawaii Pacific’s Fisher Ransom. It was Bercan and Yamashita’s second All-PacWest selection.

Second Team picks Ben Crinella and Dysen Park of Hilo were repeat winners, as was HPU’s Kyle Krupp. Third Team members Jacob Torres (Hilo), Rico See (Hawaii Pacific), Zachary DuBourdieu (Academy of Art) and Chaminade’s Ky Stopp were also second time selections.

The All-PacWest teams are based solely on the final 2025 Clippd rankings.
