Lions, Sea Lions and Sunbirds Sweep Opponents

Vanguard used stiffling defense including nine steals from Aibigho Ujadughele for Defender of the Week. FPU's Isaac Peralta reached 1,000 points and also shared the wealth with 16 assists. PLNU won key games against contenders Concordia and Jessup for Team of the Week.

Point Loma won a pair of key conference games against PacWest contenders to earn Team of the Week. Fresno Pacific’s Isaac Peralta helped his team to two wins as well, dishing out a PacWest season-high 11 assists against Hilo. Vanguard’s Aibigho Ujadughele led a stifling Lions defense with nine steals in two victories for Defender of the Week.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Fresno Pacific’s Isaac Peralta, G, Sr., 6-2, 185, Orange County, Calif.                            
Fresno Pacific’s Isaac Peralta captained his team to a pair of wins against Westmont (73-69) and Hawaii Hilo (89-80) to help the Sunbirds improve to 4-3 in PacWest play. The senior guard dished 11 assists, a PacWest season high, against the Vulcans and had 16 total assists on the week. He averaged 13 points a game, and the fourth-year Sunbird scored career point number 1,000. The southern California native hit 16 of 19 free throws, including free tosses to secure the win late against Westmont.
 
DEFENDER OF THE WEEK: Vanguard’s Aibigho Ujadughele, G, Grad., 6-2, 205, Long Beach, Calif.                    
Vanguard’s Aibigho Ujadughele led a staunch Lion defense that allowed just 60 ppg last week in a pair of Vanguard wins. The CSU San Bernardino grad transfer had six steals in a 80-64 win over Westmont and totaled nine thefts for the week. He also had six rebounds and a blocked shot for VU, who leads the PacWest in fewest points allowed per game at 68.0. Ujadughele’s award is the first PacWest Player of the Week honor for Vanguard since the Lions joined the conference in 2024-25.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: The Point Loma Sea Lions won two more games to claim Team of the Week honors. Point Loma edged Jessup at home on Thursday 92-83 behind Andrew Nagy’s 21 points and then hit the road for a 74-64 victory at Concordia. Against the Golden Eagles, PLNU had five players in double figures, led by Caden Harris and Jaden Matingou with 16 each. Matingou averaged 17 points per game for the week, hitting 11 of 19 shots. Point Loma has now won four straight to improve to 12-3 overall and 7-2 in league play.
 
PACWEST NEWS AND NOTES: We are still a long ways out from the PacWest Championships March 5-7 in San Diego, but IF the season ended today here would be the six teams to qualify for the tournament: Chaminade (4-1), Point Loma (7-2), Vanguard (4-2), Concordia (5-3), Hawaii Pacific (4-3) and Fresno Pacific (4-3). Jessup is just one half-game back at 4-4…Jessup went 2-1 last week paced by Andre Norris and his 16 points a game. Norris had 27 points against Hawaii Pacific. Versus APU, Tom Parsons had 17 points off the bench on 7-of-8 shooting in just 14 minutes of play…The Sharks were also 2-1 on their northern California trip, using Quentin Meza’s offense (15.3 ppg) and Joshua West’s defense (16 rebounds, 7 steals against Dominican)…Dominican’s Michael Wilson had 26 points with seven three-pointers in the Penguins’ loss to HPU…While Aibigho Vjadughele led the Vanguard defense to two wins (see above), Erik Howlin provided the offense with 17.5 points per contest on 14 of 26 shooting…Menlo went 2-1 to improve to 3-6 in conference play. The Oaks upset Concordia 75-68, shooting 55 percent from the field and using 27 points from their bench. They topped Hilo with Kai Brown supplying 23 points off the bench…Biola’s Tyus Parrish-Tillman had 27 points and eight rebounds in a 85-78 loss to Azusa Pacific. DJ Sanders led the Cougars with 20 points and seven boards.
 
WHAT’S NEXT: 14 PacWest games are on the schedule this week, beginning with a Tuesday slate that features Azusa Pacific at Fresno Pacific, Biola at Point Loma and Vanguard at Chaminade. On Thursday, Concordia travels to Fresno Pacific, Westmont is at Biola, Vanguard is at Hawaii Pacific, Menlo is at Chaminade and Dominican flies to Hilo. Saturday wraps the week with Concordia at Jessup, Fresno Pacific at Westmont, Azusa Pacific at Point Loma, Vanguard at Hilo, Menlo at Hawaii Pacific and Dominican is at Chaminade.
