Hawaii Pacific’s Quentin Meza helped the Sharks to two wins by averaging 20.3 points through a trio of games and Shad Thomas had a goliath performance in a Azusa Pacific victory with 19 points and 19 rebounds.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Hawaii Pacific’s Quentin Meza, G, Jr., 6-0, West Valley, Utah
Hawaii Pacific’s Quentin Meza had three big games as the Sharks went 2-1 in a trio of home contests. He averaged 20.3 points and 5.8 rebounds to help HPU improve to 12-5 overall and 8-4 in the PacWest. In a 13-point victory over Biola, the Utah native had 19 points, seven rebounds and five assists, and he followed that with 18 points against Westmont. The 6-foot guard ended the long week with 24 points and eight rebounds in a win over Concordia to earn his second PacWest POW award this season.
DEFENDER OF THE WEEK: Azusa Pacific’s Shad Thomas, F-C, Grad., 6-7, Union Island, St. Vincent and Grenadines
Azusa Pacific’s Shad Thomas had one of the most impressive all-around games of any PacWest player this season with 19 points and 19 rebounds in a 72-63 win over Vanguard. 13 of his boards came on the defensive end and the 19 rebounds are a PacWest season high by three. The Catawba grad transfer hit 8-of-12 shots from the field. This is his second award this season for Thomas, as he also won Player of the Week honors in early January.
TEAM OF THE WEEK: The
Hawaii Hilo Vulcans won back-to-back games over Concordia (73-63) and Biola (68-59) for their second and third PacWest wins of the season. The Vulcans began the week with a tough loss to Westmont (75-65) with
Julio Montes II putting up 17 points and
Jayden Hosen adding 15 points off the bench. Montes II led the way again against the Golden Eagles with 22 points, hitting all nine of his free throw opportunities. Five Vulcans were in double figures and UHH outscored CUI in the second, half, 47-33. In Saturday’s victory, Montes II had 16 points, seven rebounds and four assists to push his squad to the win over Biola.
PACWEST NEWS AND NOTES: Westmont won two games in Hawaii and then had their four-game win streak snapped with a loss to first place
Chaminade, 90-78. The Silverswords shot 54 percent from the field and nailed 13-of 27 three-point attempts. Westmont hit 14 treys (14-for-30)…
Jessup went 2-1 last week with victories over Fresno Pacific (86-81) and Menlo in overtime (72-67). The Warriors had five players in double figures against the Sunbirds and pulled away with 50 second half points. Against the Oaks,
Andre Norris hit a three-pointer early in overtime and he also had seven steals in the contest.
Tom Parsons had 51 points on the week for Jessup and averaged nine rebounds a game…
Biola handed Chaminade its first home loss of the season, 98-85 on Thursday. The Eagles outscored the ‘Swords 59-43 in the second half and hit 73 percent of their shots from the field and they were 8-of-12 from behind the arc…
Concordia’s Kaden Minter had 30 points in CUI’s loss to UHH, nailing 9 of 15 three-point attempts. The nine makes is a PacWest best this season and the 15 attempts equaled the conference season high…
Vanguard’s Erik Howlin had a big game in a losing cause against APU, scoring 16 points with 13 rebounds and five assists…The Lions bounced back with a big win over Point Loma, 76-67. Vanguard shot 50 percent from the field on their way to snapping PLNU’s six-game win streak. Howlin had 23 points in the victory…Heading into the final week of the month, the PacWest standings are tight as can be with
Chaminade still leading at 8-2, followed by
Point Loma (9-3),
Hawaii Pacific (8-4),
