Sea Lions, Menlo's Penzold Repeat Wins and Awards

Point Loma is the Team of the Week for the fifth straight time, and Oak freshman Kim Penzold wins back-to-back tournaments for her second straight Player of the Week award.

If this March 25 women’s golf weekly looks a lot like the last one to you, you are not wrong. Point Loma repeats for the fourth straight time as the Team of the Week after winning the Big Freeze in Richmond, Calif.  Also, for the second consecutive time, Menlo’s Kim Penzold is the Player of the Week after her medalist performance at the Big Freeze.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Menlo’s Kim Penzold, Fr., Rathenow, Germany                                                                
Menlo’s Kim Penzold has back-to-back tournament wins after winning Dominican’s Big Freeze this week and the RCA Electric Invitational earlier this month. The freshman captured the tournament on Tuesday (March 24) with a -1 two-round score of 143, with consistent rounds of 71 and 72. She edged Western Washington’s Lauren Lee and Point Loma’s Summer Schaefer by one shot. The German native had three birdies in each round and totaled 26 pars over the two days. The first year collegian already has two wins and one runner-up performance in her young career.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: Point Loma Sea Lions                                                                                                                                                                                                                                               
Point Loma captured their fourth straight Team of the Week honor after winning the Big Freeze in Richmond. The Sea Lions finished above four other PacWest teams, including runner-up and host Dominican. PLNU finished with a team tally of +19, eleven shots better than the Penguins. Summer Schaefer was the Point Loma leader at even par, followed by Giana Gunasayan at +2 and Isabella Gunasaysn at +3. The Sea Lions have now placed first, first, second, and fifth in tournaments since the beginning of 2026.

PACWEST NEWS AND NOTES: In Richmond, Dominican finished second (+30) with Madi Whitney (+6) as the Penguins top scorer. Westmont was third (+36), led by Sydnee Magpoc (+5), Menlo was seventh (+52) paced by of course by medalist Kim Penzold, and Jessup was eighth (+63), led by a fourth place finish from Jessica Burdick (+1)….Westmont competed mid-month in Goodyear at the SMSU Classic, finishing fifth of six teams. Hannah Camara tied for eighth at +10…

LOOKING AHEAD: Next up are a pair of tournament in Arizona. Five teams will be in Goodyear this coming Friday and Saturday—Hawaii Pacific, Hawaii Hilo, Point Loma, Vanguard and Jessup. Next Monday and Tuesday, the scene shifts to Tucson where Point Loma, Hawaii Pacific and Hawaii Hilo will be in action. Looking ahead, the PacWest Championships are on April 20-22, 2026 in North Las Vegas at the Aliante Golf Club.
