Golden Eagles are Red Hot, While Biola, PLNU and HPU Keep Streaking

Concordia is the Team of the Week after going 3-0, pushing their win streak to five. Cayden McDaniel helped his Jessup team go 2-0, and Azusa's Shad Thomas continues to clear the boards with a 19-rebound performance.

Concordia won their fifth in a row by winning a trio of games for Team of the Week. Jessup’s Cayden McDaniel averaged 21.5 points a game to help the Warriors to two wins, and Azusa Pacific’s Shad Thomas pulled down 19 rebounds in one game and 30 for the week to earn Defender of the Week again for the third time.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Jessup’s Cayden McDaniel, G, Soph., 6-3, Tacoma, Wash.                                                                                 
Jessup’s Cayden McDaniel earned Jessup’s first Player of the Week nod with two consistent performances for the Warriors in wins over Fresno Pacific and Azusa Pacific. Jessup topped the Sunbirds 81-73 behind McDaniel’s 25 points, five rebounds and four assists, and the Washington native followed that up with 18 points and seven boards in a 81-79 victory over Azusa Pacific. For the week, the sophomore guard averaged 21.5 points a game, shooting 11-for-20 from the field and 17 of 21 from the free throw line.
 
DEFENDER OF THE WEEK: Azusa Pacific’s Shad Thomas, F-C, Grad., 6-7, Union Island, St. Vincent and Grenadines
Azusa Pacific’s Shad Thomas is the Defender of the Week for the third consecutive time. All he did this week was pull down 19 rebounds against Jessup, and post double-doubles in both games he played. The Catawba transfer had 11 points and 11 boards against Concordia and added 21 points to his 19-rebound effort at Jessup. He averaged 16 points and 15 rebounds in the two games and totaled four steals. The 6-7 forward-center now had double figure rebound totals in six of his last seven games, including 22 last week against Hawaii Pacific, the second highest total in PacWest history.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: The Concordia Golden Eagles are red hot, having won five straight, moving to 11-6 in PacWest play. Last week, they won three in a row, taking out Hawaii Hilo, Menlo and Azusa Pacific. All three wins were by double digits, and they won at APU for only the second time in the last ten years. Kaden Minter had 27 points and 11 rebounds against Menlo and added 16 points and six boards against Hilo. Macarhy Morris had 20 against the Cougars and Marcellus Edwards had 27 in CUI’s balanced attack versus the Oaks. Coach Ken Ammann’s team has gone from 6-6 in conference play just a few weeks back to 11-6 and are now in third place.
 
ROAD TO SAN DIEGO: Defending conference champ Point Loma has a 2.5 game lead right now over second place Hawaii Pacific, but the tighter race is for the six spots that qualify teams for the PacWest Championship, March 5-7 in San Diego. Here’s a look at the top ten teams fighting for those half dozen positions. (1) Point Loma 12-3, (2) Hawaii Pacific 11-5, (3) Concordia 11-6, (4) Westmont 10-6, (5) Chaminade 8-6, (6) Dominican 8-7, (7) Jessup 9-8, (8) Fresno Pacific 8-8, (9) Vanguard 7-8, (10) Biola 7-9. Concordia has won five in a row, Biola has won four straight, Point Loma, Hawaii Pacific and Jessup have won three in a row.

PACWEST NEWS AND NOTES: Biola continued their last season rush with two more wins, this time over Menlo and Hawaii Hilo. Against the Vulcans, the Eagles erased a 11-point Hilo lead but had to survive a UHH three-point miss at the buzzer (67-65). Chris Harris had 30 points with 12 rebounds. Against Menlo, Tyus Parrish-Tillman had 24 points to lead BU…Hawaii Pacific remained in second place with a huge rivalry win against Chaminade. The Sharks overcame a 17-point deficit to clip the Silverswords, 85-78 in overtime. Quentin Meza had 19 points, including the game-tying basket with seven second left in regulation..Earlier in the week, Hilo beat Vanguard on the road, 68-64. Dre Nobles had an impressive double-double with 15 points and 16 rebounds, the third highest total in the PacWest this year. Nobles also had 17 points and 14 rebounds in the two-point loss to Biola…In Point Loma’s lone game of the week, Andrew Nagy hit 10 of 12 shots for 23 points in a 91-68 win over Menlo. The Sea Lions had 55 second half points…Nick Madeeiros had 24 points in Dominican’s 85-79 overtime win over Fresno Pacific. Brandon Gibson, Jr. had 16 points off the bench for the Sunbirds…Westmont beat Vanguard 79-62 despite Erik Howlin’s 24 points for the Lions. Jarrett Bryant had 19 for the Warriors and Trey Thompson added 17.

WHAT’S NEXT: More impact games are on the slate again this week. Point Loma, Fresno Pacific and Jessup head to Hawaii for three games each Before that, Azusa Pacific is at Dominican on Monday and Concordia is at Westmont on Wednesday. On Thursday, Biola goes to Dominican, and Vanguard is at APU.
