Azusa Pacific Wins Three More and Awards

Cougars top Sharks, Mavericks and Jumbos to improve to 15-4 on season.

Azusa Pacific went 3-0 and cooled off red hot Hawaii Pacific for Team of the Week. Mathys Pinoit played a key role, which included a three-set win over a top ranked player in APU’s 4-3 win over Tufts.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Azusa Pacific’s Mathys Pinoit, Jr., 5-10, France                                          
Azusa Pacific’s Mathys Pinoit went 4-1 on the week to help the Cougars go 3-0 with wins over Hawaii Pacific, Tufts and Colorado Mesa. In a huge win over the Sharks, Pinoit went toe-to-toe with Ethan Terry on court two for a 7-5, 6-4 win, and against Tufts, the France native outlasted Gary Bahl, 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, 10-2. Bahl is ranked #18 nationally in Division III. The Southern Arkansas transfer teamed with Soeren Grandke to go 2-1 on court one in doubles. He is now 15-3 on the year in singles and has won eight straight matches.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: Azusa Pacific Cougars                                                                                        
Azusa Pacific ran their win streak to 10 in a row with three more victories to improve to 15-4 on the season. The Cougars swept Colorado Mesa (7-0), handed Tufts just their second loss of the season in a 4-3 grinder and upended Hawaii Pacific (5-2), who had won five in a row. Against the Sharks, APU won the doubles points and was victorious on the top two singles courts to take control (Soeren Grandke, Mathys Pinoit) and clinched with Joan Crespo’s three-set win over Seth Newman. Against Tufts, one of the top ranked teams in D3, APU lost the doubles point but won four of six singles matches, including on the top two courts again, and David Brownlee won a three-setter on court four to help secure the win.

ITA NATIONAL RANKINGS: Biola’s duo of Angel Guerrero and Alejandro Flores Monteverde is ranked No. 2 in the ITA doubles list, sporting a 11-1 record. Azusa Pacific’s Soeren Grandke is listed at No. 19 in singles, and with Mathys Pinoit is listed No. 23 in doubles. PACWEST NEWS AND NOTES: Biola outlasted Point Loma 4-3 in a PacWest battle on Saturday to improve to 12-1. Adam Large clinched the match for the Eagles on court two with a 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 battle with Finn Kirschner. Point Loma won the doubles and Biola had to battle back which included a win on court three for Alejandro Flores Monteverde over David Fisinger, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1…Hawaii Hilo had the most challenging of road trips to Texas, which included 4-3 losses to UT-Tyler and Midwestern State. Jaime Paquet lost a tough match to  No. 10 nationally ranked Germano Setti of Midwestern, 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (11-9), but defeated No. 18 Malo Poulesqueen, 6-2, 6-3.

THIS WEEK: In matches involving PacWest vs. PacWest teams this week, Biola is at Fresno Pacific on Tuesday and the Eagles travel to Menlo on Wednesday. On Thursday, Menlo is at Azusa Pacific, and Saturday shows APU at Point Loma and Westmont at Biola. To see the complete schedule, click here.
