Fresno Pacific Flips the Script with Wins Over Eagles, Oaks

The Sunbirds handed Biola their first PacWest loss and also got revenge on Menlo after having lost to both squads earlier this year. Jordi Gonzalez led the way with a 4-0 record.

Fresno Pacific handed Biola its first loss against a PacWest team this season and also defeated Menlo for Team of the Week honors. Sunbird Jordi Gonzalez went 4-0 on the week, including winning clinches matches against the Eagles and Oaks.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Fresno Pacific’s Jordi Gonzalez, Fr., 5-9, Lleida, Spain                                                                  
Fresno Pacific’s Jordi Gonzalez  went 4-0 in FPU’s wins over Biola and Menlo last week. In the upset of Biola, the freshman from Spain won his doubles match on court two with Emilio Seelbach (6-0), and then won the clinching bout on singles court four with a 6-4, 6-3 victory. Two days later against Menlo, the same Sunbird doubles duo won 6-2, and Gonzalez then capped his successful week with a 6-1, 6-2 singles win.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: Fresno Pacific Sunbirds                                                                                        
Fresno Pacific pulled off the biggest upset of the season, edging Biola 4-3 on the Sunbird courts. FPU had just lost to the Eagles 6-1 on March 10. This time, they handed Biola their first Division II loss of the season by winning the doubles point, including a major win on court one with Cedric Kaufman and Joaquin Salinas beating the No. 2 ranked duo of Angel Guerrero and Alejandro Flores Monteverde, 7-6.  FPU then overcame losses on the top two singles courts and stormed back with victories on court three (Angel Espana), court six (Tim Bangert) and clinched on court four (Jordi Gonzalez). Against Menlo, whom FPU also lost to earlier this season 4-3, the Sunbirds again took the doubles point and followed that with victories on court two (Emilio Seelbach), Gonzalez at No. 4 and Salinas wrapped up the win on court six in a three-set battle. The final score was 5-2.

ITA NATIONAL RANKINGS: Biola’s duo of Angel Guerrero and Alejandro Flores Monteverde is ranked No. 5 in the ITA doubles list, sporting a 11-2 record. Azusa Pacific’s Soeren Grandke and Mathys Pinoit are 17 in doubles. In singles, Grandke is 22nd and Hawaii Hilo’s Jamie Paquet is 44th.  Biola is the PacWest’s top team at No. 27. To see the lists, click here.

PACWEST NEWS AND NOTES: Biola bounced back from their loss to Fresno Pacific with a 4-3 win over Menlo the next day. Alejandro Flores Monteverde won in three sets on court one to spearhead the victory…Azusa Pacific defeated Point Loma in San Diego, 5-2…The first official PacWest tennis seedings came out last Wednesday, with two more listings remaining. The seedings take into account head-to-head match-ups, matches against other teams in the conference and the ITA national algorhythm rankings. Last week, those rankings looked like this last week, with records listed from that time. 1. Biola (8-1), 2. Azusa Pacific (5-1), 3. Hawaii Pacific (5-2), Hawaii Hilo (3-3), Fresno Pacific (3-4), Point Loma (1-3), Menlo (2-5), Westmont (2-5), Jessup (0-4).

THIS WEEK: In matches involving PacWest vs. PacWest teams this week, Westmont is at Fresno Pacific on Wednesday and the Warriors are at Jessup on Thursday. On Friday, Point Loma will be at Hawaii Pacific, Westmont goes to Menlo and Biola is at Azusa Pacific in a major match-up. On Saturday, Hilo plays Point Loma and Jessup is at FPU.
