Jessup takes four from the defending champs. HPU's Blakeney gets first collegiate win in stunning fashion and Menlo's Hanshaw has a day to remember.

Jessup pulled off a stunner in Santa Barbara with a four-game sweep of defending PacWest champion Westmont. Hawaii Pacific’s Nick Blakeney pitched a gem to pick up his first collegiate win and Mason Hanshaw of Menlo had a day to remember with three home runs and six RBI.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Menlo’s Mason Hanshaw, Sr., C, 6-1, R/R, Danville, Calif.                    
Menlo’s Mason Hanshaw had a game he will never forget during the Oaks’ series with Fresno Pacific. The senior catcher went 3-for-4 with three home runs and six RBI during a 10-7 slugfest loss to the Sunbirds, accounting for almost all of his team’s runs. The former Sonoma State player homered in the third, eighth and ninth innings to lead the Oaks comeback that fell just short. Hanshaw had just one home run coming into the day and hit .555 for the series.
  
PITCHER OF THE WEEK: Hawaii Pacific’s Nick Blakeney, Fr., 5-10, L/L, Las Vegas, Nev.            
Hawaii Pacific’s Nick Blakeney pitched a complete-game, two-hitter against rival Chaminade during a 6-2 win last week. It was only the fourth appearance of the season for the freshman left-hander and it was his first collegiate victory. Blakeney went seven innings, walked just one batter, struck out three and wrapped everything up with a tidy 81 pitches. The rookie carried a perfect game into the fifth inning before giving up a lead-off single and allowed one more hit in the seventh and a pair of unearned runs. Prior to this outing, the Las Vegas native had pitched a total of just 6.1 innings on the season.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: The PacWest Team of the Week is the Jessup Warriors. Jessup moved squarely into the conference playoff race with a four-game sweep of the defending conference tournament and regular season champs, on the road. Jessup won three of those games by one run during the 8-7, 6-3, 5-4 and 1-0 series sweep. Eric Vasser picked up the win in one game with six shutout innings and Kai Hirayama had a complete game victory in another with no walks and seven strikeouts. Landyn Plaut and Quinton Hall led the hit brigade with eight RBI and three home runs between them. The JU Warriors are now 20-14 in PacWest play (tied for fourth), 24-16 overall and have won five straight games.

THIS WEEK IN THE PACWEST: It's a really busy week in the PacWest with a number of very important series on tap. On Monday, Concordia and Hawaii Hilo wrap up a four-game series. On Wednesday/Thursday, Hawaii Pacific plays at Vanguard. On Thursday, Fresno Pacific is at Jessup. Friday-Saturday series include Chaminade at Biola, Westmont at Point Loma, Jessup at Fresno Pacific and Concordia and Azusa Pacific will swap locations for four games. PACWEST NEWS AND NOTES: Hawaii Pacific went 4-1 during a busy week with two wins over Chaminade and they took two of three from Biola…Azusa Pacific salvaged one win in three tries against Divivision I Utah Tech (formerly Dixie State)…Fresno Pacific kept pace in the postseason tournament race with three wins in four tries against Menlo…Vanguard won two of three against Chaminade…FPU’s Cruz Cabral was magnificent in his first career start, fanning 12 batters in 5.1 innings against Menlo. He allowed three runs and six hits in grabbing the win…In the same series, Menlo’s Matthew Verdugo got the 3-1 win by pitching five innings and allowing just the one run on five hits, retiring the final seven batters he faced…HPU’s Tan Taguchi hit .529 on the week (9-17)…FPU’s Teejan Smith was 5-for-11 with 5 RBI and two home runs…The countdown begins toward the PacWest Championship tournament, May 6-8 in Santa Barbara. The top four teams will qualify. Point Loma has a commanding lead in first place at 28-4, followed by Concordia (21-13), Fresno Pacific (18-12), Jessup (20-14), Azusa Pacific (20-14), Hawaii Pacific (17-12) and Westmont (18-13).
