Mark Bohren and David Goodman Share PacWest Coach of the Year Honors

Azusa Pacific and Biola leaders led their teams to the top two seeds in this week's PacWest championships. APU's Soeren Grandke is the Player of the Year. PLNU's Stanislas Noel is the Newcomer of the Year and Hawaii Hilo's Max Solano is selected as the Freshman of the Year.

SURPRISE, Ariz.—Azusa Pacific and Biola, Cornerstone Cup rivals, split their matches against each other this season, and were the top two teams in the PacWest Conference seedings heading into tomorrow’s championship.

The Cougars and Eagles will also split the PacWest Coach of the Years honors as well. Azusa Pacific’s Mark Bohren and Biola’s David Goodman were selected Co-Coaches of the Year in a vote of their peers.
APU’s Soeren Grandke is the PacWest Player of the Year, Stanislas Noel of Point Loma is the Newcomer of the Year and Hawai`i Hilo’s Max Solano is the Freshman of the Year.

Soeren Grandke played in the top spot for the Cougars all season long and earned his second First Team All-PacWest honor. The 6-foot-7 junior did not lose a match all season against a player from the D2 west region and captured the ITA West Regional Cup last Fall. Ranked 24th nationally in singles, the German is 25-6 in singles play and 22-5 in doubles.

Mark Bohren led the Cougars to the No. 1 seed in this week’s PacWest tournament, and they are red-hot coming to Surprise on a 16-match win streak. At 19-5, three of their losses were at the ITA winter national indoor championships and another other was to Biola. He reached 600 career wins in the middle of his 30th season in 2025 and is now a stunning 631-169. One more win will give Bohren his 20th career 20-win season. He also the PacWest women’s co-Coach of the Year.

David Goodman led the Biola to one of the most successful seasons in program history. The Eagles finished the regular season 15-3 overall and defeated (at the time) nationally-ranked #12 Azusa Pacific and #47 Western New Mexico. The team had a seven-match winning streak, earned PacWest Team of the Week honors twice, produced two PacWest Players of the Week, achieved a national ITA ranking as high as No. 22 and was nationally-ranked for six consecutive weeks. The former APU player is now in his 12th season as the leader at Biola.

Point Loma’s Stanislas Noel made a big splash for the Sea Lions this year after transferring from Edinboro University. The senior from France reached the quarterfinals of last fall’s ITA West Region tournament, and is currently 9-6 in singles play on court one and is 8-6 at first doubles. At Edinboro, Noel was a two-time first team all-conference player and was the PSAC Player of the Year.

Hawaii Hilo’s Max Solano has played a huge role for the Vulcans as a true freshman. Playing at No. 2 singles, the Spainard is 10-3 and is 7-5 overall in doubles. He has wins over two nationally ranked players this season and has won seven of his last ten matches.

Grandke and Noel were First Team selections, along with Alejandro Flores Monteverde (Biola), Jaime Paquet (Hawaii Hilo), Adam Vasir (Hawaii Pacific) and Angel Guerrero Melgar (Biola). Paquet and Monteverde were also First Team picks in 2025, and this is Vasir’s second all-conference nod.

Second Team selections David James Brownlee (APU), Adam Large (Biola) and Mile Matic (HPU) were also chosen for a second time. Grandke, the Biola duo of Monteverde and Melgar and PLNU’s Noel were also First Team Doubles selections.

The PacWest men's championships begins tomorrow (Wednesday) at 9 am. For more tournament information, including results and Live stats, go to the tournament page by clicking here.
