Azusa Pacific Tops Eagles, Move to Top Spot

The Cougars beat Biola in a uber close match to move to the top of the seeding list. Westmont's Driss Sedrati won three more matches to make it 10 in a row for Player of the Week.

Azusa Pacific moved into the top seeding slot with a massive win over Biola to earn Team of the Week. Westmont’s Driss Sedrati went 3-0 in singles to garner Player of the Week.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Westmont’s Driss Sedrati, Jr., 5-8, Casablanca, Morocco                                            
Westmont’s Driss Sedrati won all three of his singles matches last week to run his winning streak to 10 on courts two and three. The Morocco native won all of his bouts in straight sets, including a 6-4, 7-5 battle over Azusa Pacific’s Ben Behrend at No. 2 singles. The left-hander, who transferred to Westmont from Lake Superior State (MI), is now 13-3 on the season in singles. Sedrati is Westmont’s first PacWest Player of the Week in men's tennis.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: Azusa Pacific Cougars                                                                                                         
Azusa Pacific moved from a No. 2 seeding to the top spot, flipping spots with Biola after their 6-1 win over the Eagles on April 3. The match between the top two seeds was wwwwaaayyyy closer than the final team score, with APU winning three of the singles matches in three sets, with their other two singles victories also very close. Soeren Grandke won on court one in a battle of two of the top players in the conference against Alejandro Monteverde, 7-5, 6-7 (5-7), 10-6, while #4 David James Brownlee won a marathon over Keyon Gahvarehchi, 6-7 (3-7), 6-3, 14-12. The Cougars improved to 17-4 on the season, and with their win over Westmont on Monday have now won 13 straight matches.

FIELD FINALIZED FOR PACWEST CHAMPIONSHIPS: The six teams that will compete next week at the 2026 Pacific West Conference Women’s Tennis Championships are set, finalized yesterday by the conference seeding committee. The six teams below are currently seeded in this order, but the committee will meet again on Saturday night to take into account matches played this week before finalizing the tournament order and match-ups. (1) Azusa Pacific, (2) Biola, (3) Hawaii Pacific, (4) Point Loma, (5) Hawaii Hilo, (6) Fresno Pacific. The tournament will be held at the Surprise (AZ) Tennis and Racquet Center, April 15-17 (Wednesday-Friday). Men’s matches will begin at 9 am on each of those days.

THIS WEEK: There are a handful of matches this week as teams wrap up the season or are trying to improve their seeding heading into next week’s championships. Azusa Pacific goes to Fresno Pacific on Thursday and on Saturday Jessup is at Menlo and Point Loma goes to Westmont.  

PACWEST NEWS AND NOTES: Point Loma picked a huge win in Hawaii against Hawaii Hilo to vault them from sixth in the rankings to fourth…Fresno Pacific went 2-0 with victories over Westmont and Jessup. Jordi Gonzalez was 2-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles…Hawaii Pacific went 2-0 with victories over Point Loma and Colorado Mesa.

ITA NATIONAL RANKINGS: Biola’s duo of Angel Guerrero and Alejandro Flores Monteverde is ranked No. 4 in the ITA doubles list. Azusa Pacific’s Soeren Grandke and Mathys Pinoit are 9th in doubles. In singles, Grandke is 20th.  Biola is the PacWest’s top team at No. 36, followed closely by APU at 38. To see the lists, click here.
