Eagles Stay Alive with 2-0 Shutout

Biola and Concordia will play again at 2:45 for the title match.

LA MIRADA, Calif.--Ariana Banos doubled home the only two runs of the game and Biola pitchers Kayla Bousquette and DJ Symons combined to shutout Concordia during a 2-0 Thursday Pacific West Conference Softball Tournament game at Freedom Field.

That means a rematch at 2:45 today between the Eagles and Golden Eagles, both with one loss in the tournament. The winner takes the conference trophy and the automatic NCAA tournament berth that goes with it.

With their backs against the wall, the Eagles responded. It began with strong pitching from BU's Bousquette, who went the first four innings and allowed just two hits, no walks and she fanned four. She left the game when a line-drive single went off her leg and Symons then entered and went the rest of the way.

A half inning prior to that, Biola finally broke through against CUI pitcher Jayden Nishi. Nishi was cruising, but after a walk in the top of the fifth she was removed. Kailey Estes entered, but was greeted by a Lizzie Byer single. After a Mikayla Huskey single, Bonos supplied the most important hit of the game, a double to bring home two runners to make the score 2-0.

The Golden Eagles had runners on the corners in the fifth and they loaded the bases in the sixth, but couldn't score. In the bottom of the seventh, Serena Velez doubled and Jessica Im singled, but both were left stranded as Symons got the final out via a ground ball.

Alexa Sheard had two hits for the Eagles, as did Banos. Im had two hits for Concordia. Symons got the win in the pitcher's circle and improved to 18-14. She gave up four hits in three innings, walked one and struck out two.

Concordia carries a 42-15 record into the title game, while Biola is 37-20.
