Concordia Homers Way to PacWest Title

The Golden Eagles win their fourth straight conference tournament title with a 8-0 win over Biola.

LA MIRADA, Calif.—Concordia bounced back from a 2-0 setback earlier in the day to shutdown the same Biola Eagles in the Pacific West Conference Championship game, 8-0 on Thursday afternoon at Freedom Field.

That gives the Golden Eagles the PacWest’s automatic berth into next week’s NCAA tournament. Concordia has now won all four PacWest tournament titles since the 4-team format began in 2023.

45 minutes after the sting of a 2-0 loss to Biola to force a final game, Concordia jumped out early with four runs in the first inning and four more in the second. That 8-0 lead would hold through the five innings where the 8-run mercy rule came into play.

Audrey Robles and Caitlynn Campbell hit two-run homers in the first inning to give the Golden Eagles a 4-0 lead before Biola came to bat. In the second it was Veronica Moore with a three-run shot and Campbell with another a solo blast to make it 8-0.

Biola threatened a few times the rest of the way, but starting pitcher Kacie Gossett worked out of each jam to get the win and the shutout. She finished the five innings and scattered eight hits and one walk.

Gossett was named the tournaments Outstanding Pitcher with a pair of wins. Robles was selected as the Most Outstanding Player. She hit two home runs in the tournament, drove in five and almost hit for the cycle in the opening game of the tournament.

Robles and Campbell had two hits each today, part of CUI’s seven-hit attack. Jackie Ibarra and Mikayla Huskey both had a pair of hits for Biola.

Concordia will now await the NCAA’s final seeding and to learn where they will go for next week’s tournament. Biola, as the No. 6 seed coming into this week, has a very solid chance to be playing next week as well.

“I feel good about our chances next week,” said Concordia head coach Crystal Rosenthal. “We have lots of experience and a tough line-up 1-9. We have good speed and good pitching that I think is underrated.”

“We knew it would be a grind today,” said Biola head coach Kristen Halte. “We put up a great fight, had great belief. We battled well and hopefully get to continue our season into next week.”

The NCAA Selection Show is at 7 am on Monday.
