WITCHITA FALLS, Tex. -- Cal Poly Pomona avenged a loss from early in the season against Biola, earning a 5-0 win in the first round of the NCAA West/South Central Super Regional on Friday afternoon at Midwestern State University.
No. 7 seed Cal Poly Pomona will advance to play No. 2 Midwestern State in the second round after beating No. 10 Biola. For the Eagles, this was their first NCAA postseason berth, and they finish the season with an 11-7 record after playing eight matches against regionally-ranked teams this season.
Biola found out that it qualified for the postseason on Monday. The Eagles were ranked tenth in the final regional rankings, and after Lubbock Christian lost in penalty kicks to Midwestern State in the Lone Star Conference Championship Match, the final spot in the postseason was awarded to Biola.
Cal Poly Pomona, which is a perennial presence in this tournament, showed its experience in the start of the match, scoring two goals within a minute of each other to lead 2-0 after just 21 minutes. Eduardo Faria scored both of those goals with the second coming on a penalty kick.
Biola attempted put more players forward to chip away at the deficit, but Cal Poly Pomona took advantage of that and put three more goals on the scoreboard before the match ended. Biola finished the year in third place in the PacWest.
