IRVINE, Calif. – Academy of Art’s
Julius Kreutzer was voted by the PacWest coaches as the conference’s Golfer of the Year to lead the All-PacWest Team, which includes PacWest Freshman of the Year
Keita Okada from Hawai`i Pacific. Academy of Art head coach
Andy Moren is the PacWest Coach of the Year after leading his team to the conference title.
During the regular season, Kreutzer won three individual titles at the Bay Area Invitational, Nighthawks Invitational and Sonoma State Invitational. He won three Golfer of the Week awards this season, including one for his runner-up finish at the Pioneer Shootout. Kreutzer also helped his team finish in the top-3 at all events this season, including two team titles during the regular season.
Then at the PacWest Championships, Kreutzer continued his impressive season by finishing in second place overall while leading the Urban Knights to the PacWest title. Kreutzer shot an even-par 70 in the opening round and then shot 1-under-par 69 in each of the next two rounds to finish just one shot behind first place.
Okada was dominant during the month of April, winning three titles that month. He started the month by winning the Hawai`i Challenge with a score of 2-under-par 138 to help the Sharks to a second-place team finish. The following week, Okada won the Hawai`i Triangular and this time he led his team to the title as well. Okada won the event by six shots with a 3-under-par 141. The freshman then won the PacWest Championships with a 3-under-par 107. His second-round score of 2-under-par 68 was tied for the best round in the tournament.
Moren led Academy of Art to its first PacWest title in program history, earning a trip to the NCAA West Regional. Along with Kreutzer,
Matthew Watkins and
Gabriel Manotoc both finished in the top 10 of the event to help the Urban Knights come from behind in one of the closest PacWest Championships in conference history. The Urban Knights won with a score of 21-over-par 861. Academy of Art also won titles at the Bay Area Invitational and the Sonoma State Invitational and never finished worse than third place all season.
Watkins and Manotoc are both third-time All-PacWest selections after they helped the Urban Knights to the conference title. Dominican’s
Matt Fry and Holy Names’
Aniceto Mandanas each received their second All-PacWest recognition. The Urban Knights had a total of four All-PacWest selections, while Holy Names had a league-best total of six. Hawai`i Hilo and Hawai`i Pacific each had two honorees.
Luke Dugger from Holy Names and
Dustin Franko from Hawai`i Hilo joined Kreutzer, Okada and Watkins among the first-team honorees.
