IRVINE, Calif. – The spring season for golf started this week with a pair of PacWest teams in action, including Biola competing at the Jack Brown Memorial, where
Sami Penor won the individual title for Biola, which is now ranked No. 5 by the NCAA in the West Region. On the men’s side, a group of NCAA Division I teams went to the big island with Hawai`i Hilo hosting, and
Keith Ng had the top performance for the Vulcans’ to earn Golfer of the Week honors on the men’s side.
WOMEN’S GOLFER OF THE WEEK
Sami Penor, Biola
Jr. – Henderson, Nev.
Penor got off to a great start at the Jack Brown Memorial, shooting a 4-under-par 68 on the first day of the tournament to hold a four-stroke lead over the rest of the field. Scores rose for the entire field during the second round, but Penor weathered the storm and finished the round with a 2-over-par 74, which kept her lead at four strokes. Penor defended her lead well and even increased it during the final round as she finished at 1-under-par 215 for the whole tournament, winning first place. She helped Biola finish in third place out of nine teams, trailing only DBU and Texas A&M International.
MEN’S GOLFER OF THE WEEK
Keith Ng, Hawai`i Hilo
Jr. – Richmond, Canada
Ng finished with the best score for the Vulcans at the Amer Ari Intercollegiate, which featured 17 NCAA Division I programs along with Hawai`i Hilo. Oklahoma State won the team title after Texas Tech and Arizona State each held the lead during the first two rounds. Ng got a strong start with a 1-over-par 73 after the first round which put him in the middle of the leaderboard. In the second round, he finished at 2-over-par 74 and was in a tie for 79th place out of 115 golfers. When it was all said and done, Ng finished at 12-over-par 228, which was three shots ahead of Andrew Otani for the Vulcans’ top finish.
