PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Hawai`i Hilo's Iago Perez Ferreiro, F., Sr., 6-1, 185, A Coruna, Spain
Hawai`i Hilo's Iago Perez Ferreiro scored in each of Hawai`i Hilo's historic wins last week to help the Vulcans move into first place in the Pacific West Conference standings. The Spain native scored the clinching goal in the upset of No. 10 nationally ranked Sea Lions, scoring in the 83rd minute to make it a 2-0 score. Against Concordia, the senior forward pitched in the go-head goal in the 19th minute of an eventual 3-1 victory. The former Southern New Hampshire star, who was the NE-10 Player of the Year last Fall, now has seven goals on the season.
DEFENDER OF THE WEEK: Hawai`i Hilo's Paul Waschkau, GK, Sr., 6-1, 180, Dusseldorf, Germany
Hawai`i Hilo's Paul Waschkau helped direct a shutout against Point Loma to knock off the previously conference-unbeaten Sea Lions, 2-0. That marked the first time in 2025 that the high-scoring defending conference champions have not scored, and it was the first time that they had been shutout since the 2024 NCAA West Region tournament (vs. Western Oregon). The German native had a pair of saves against Point Loma and then added four more against one goal allowed versus Concordia. The second-year Vulcan was named the PacWest Defender of the Week on almost the exact day one year ago.
TEAM OF THE WEEK: Hawai`i Hilo Vulcans
Hawai`i Hilo is the Team of the Week after gigantic home victories over Point Loma and Concordia. The 2-0 victory over the No. 10 Sea Lions is arguably their biggest win in recent program history and their first over the annual PacWest power since 2016 (seven straight matches). They also conquered Concordia 3-1 behind a goal and assist from
Miri Sato, giving the Vulcans their fourth straight victory and vaulting them past both the Sea Lions and Golden Eagles and into first place with a 5-2-1 conference record (16 points) and 8-4-2 mark overall. The Vulcans have outscored their opponents 12-1 during this current four-game run. Head coach
Diego Marroquin and the Vulcans have just two regular season matches left--Nov. 6 vs. Chaminade and Nov. 8 at Hawaii Pacific.
LOG JAM AT THE TOP: While
Hawai`i Hilo made the impressive leap to the top of the PacWest standings, they are by no means a cinch to win the title or even clinch a tournament spot until next week. Ultimately, the top four squads will make their way to Santa Barbara for the PacWest tournament on Nov. 13-15.
