Lions Win 3 of 4, Covey Dominates Again, Buckson Streaks

Vanguard won the series vs. Hawaii Hilo, with Fred Buckson hitting 3 home runs and scoring 9 times. CUI's Jake Covey fanned 12 in 7 innings to beat Point Loma.

Shortstop Fred Buckson hit three home runs and scored nine times to help his Vanguard Lions win three from Hawaii Hilo. Concordia's Jake Covey shut down No. 2 regionally ranked Point Loma, fanning 12 in just seven innings of work during a 3-1 win over the Sea Lions.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Vanguard's Fred Buckson, SS/2B, R/R, Sr., 5-10, 170, Silverdale, Wash.
Vanguard's Fred Buckson was a catalyst for the Lions during their home series win over Hawaii Hilo, taking three of four games. The middle infielder went 6-for-14 (.429), scored nine times, hit three home runs and drove in six. He went 3-for-5 in the series opening win, driving home three runs with a homer. He also had two stolen bases in the series. He had a hit in each game and now has an eight-game hitting streak.

PITCHER OF THE WEEK: Jake Covey, Concordia, RHP, Sr., 6-4, 210, Costa Mesa, Calif.                
Concordia's Jake Covey had another brilliant outing, this time against the No. 2 team in the West Region, Point Loma. Covey pitched a seven-inning complete game, allowing just one run, five hits, two walks and he equaled his season high in strikeouts with 12. He retired ten straight Sea Lions late in the game, and completed the outing on 95 pitches. The 2024 PacWest Pitcher of the Year now 4-1 with a 3.66 ERA.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: The PacWest Team of the Week is the Vanguard Lions. Vanguard hosted Hawai`i Hilo, winning three of four games in Costa Mesa. The Lions used big bats in the first two games, scoring in double digits twice during 12-9 and 12-3 victories. They then saw their 5-game winning streak snapped in a 9-6 loss, but bounced back to take the final game of the series, 7-3. VU combined for 30 hits in the four games, paced by Player of the Week Fred Buckson. On the mound, Chris Paruleski led the starters with a six-inning win, allowing just one earned run on five hits. Meanwhile, the Lions bullpen went 11 innings and gave up just one run. Vanguard has now won six of their last seven games to improve to 14-12 overall and to 10-10 in PacWest play. 

WESTMONT STAYS IN TOP SPOT IN REGION POLL: In today's NCBWA NCAA Division II West Region Poll, PacWest members Westmont and Point Loma occupy the top two spots still, with Jessup checking in at No. 8 again. That ranking looks like this with the next list coming out on March 24. (1) Westmont 22-3. (2) Point Loma 16-8, (3) Northwest Nazarene 20-10, (4) CS San Bernardino 19-7, (5) Chico State 16-10, (6) CS Monterey Bay 14-7, (7) Montana State Billings 15-9, (8) Jessup 15-6, (9) CS Dominguez Hills 13-10, (10) CS East Bay 12-11. RV--Hawaii Pacific, Vanguard, San Francisco State, CS San Marcos.

THIS WEEK IN THE PACWEST: Conference series begin midweek with Menlo at Vanguard, Chaminade at Fresno Pacific, Hawaii Pacific at Jessup and Hawaii Hilo at Point Loma. Friday-Saturday, Concordia is at Westmont and Azusa Pacific and Biola will play a split location series. 

PACWEST NEWS AND NOTES: Rain played havoc on the schedule this week, cutting a few series short and that will need to be rescheduled. In that shortened schedule, Westmont took a doubleheader from Azusa Pacific to improve to 22-3 overall and 17-1 in the PacWest. Bryce McFeely led the offense by going 4-for-5 with a double, home run, four RBI and he walked three times. Zach Yates was nails out of the bullpen with 2.2 innings combined, fanning seven of the 11 batters he faced...Point Loma and Concordia split two games, with the San Diego games rained out. In the Point Loma win (7-6), Jake Entrekin went 3-for-4 with two home runs and three RBI...Chaminade won three of four games at Menlo. In the Oaks win, pitcher Richard Kiel was masterful in nine innings of work. He allowed only one run, four hits, no walks and he fanned seven on 108 pitches...Chaminade's Cade Fujii provided lots of offense for the Silverswords in the series and in their non-conference game against Hawai`i. Fujii went 8-for-15 with a home run and three RBI...Fresno Pacific and Hawaii Pacific split four games, with runs scored a plenty except for the 4-1 game that the Sunbirds won behind Connor Semone's gem. Semone went 8.1 innings and allowed one run, one walk, eight hits and he struck out nine.
