Warriors Stun Warriors, Martinez's Bat Sparks FPU and Hilo's Groff Throws Another Gem

Jessup stunned No. 2 nationally ranked Westmont by taking three of four games. Fresno Pacific went to Point Loma and split with the No. 16 Sea Lions behind Aaron Martinez's hot swing and UH Hilo's Logan Groff went nine complete innings to beat Chaminade.

Jessup moved into second place in the PacWest by taking three of four very close games against league leader Westmont. Fresno Pacific won two of four games in San Diego against Point Loma, with Aaron Martinez hitting .611 in the series, and Hawaii Hilo's Logan Groff wins his second PacWest Pitcher of the Week award after another ironman performance.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Fresno Pacific's Aaron Martinez Jr., INF., Jr., 6-1, 205, R/R, Planada, Calif.        
Fresno Pacific's Aaron Martinez Jr. helped his Sunbird team gain a split on the road against defending conference champion Point Loma. The junior third baseman went 11-for-18 (.611) over the four games, driving in five runs and scoring five times. In the series opener on Friday, Martinez had five hits and drove in a pair of runs, making him one of just four players in the conference this season to have a 5-hit game. He had at least one base knock and an RBI in each game, and had a home run in Saturday's win. The Modesto JC transfer is hitting .376 on the season with 24 RBI. 

PITCHER OF THE WEEK: Hawai`i Hilo's Logan Groff, RHP, Sr., 6-2, 205, Garden Grove, Calif.                   
Hawai`i Hilo's Logan Groff earned his second PacWest Pitcher of the Week nod after a stellar performance on Sunday night at home against Chaminade. The senior went nine complete innings for the first time this season during a 2-1 win over the Silverswords, allowing just one run and five hits. He did not walk a batter and fanned six during an efficient 94-pitch performance to improve to 2-4 on the season. Earlier in the week, the former Fresno State and Cypress College pitcher tossed three innings against the University of Hawai`i and did not allow an earned run.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: The PacWest Team of the Week is the Jessup Warriors. The Warriors and Warriors squared off in an epic series, with all four games being decided by one run. On Saturday, Jessup won by 8-7 and 6-5 scores, with the second game going ten innings. On Sunday, they opened the day with 6-5 (10 inn.) replica victory and Westmont then avoided the sweep with a 3-2 win. Twice Gabe Harris hit pinch-hit home runs for JU to tie the game(s), while Dominic Ott hit .529 in the series, scored eight times and had a walk-off single in Sunday's 10-inning win. Ott also scored the winning run in the second game on Saturday, capping a comeback win that began with Westmont taking an early 4-0 lead with pitcher Ryan Humphries taking a no-hitter into the fifth inning. Earlier in the week, Jessup took three of four games from Chaminade, and now the Warriors are in second place in the PacWest at 20-8, just one game behind Westmont (20-6) and one game ahead of Point Loma (18-8).

THIS WEEK IN THE PACWEST: Chaminade and Hawai`i Hilo continue their series today (Monday) with a doubleheader on the Big Island. On Tuesday, Hawai`i Pacific plays a non-conference game at the University of Hawai`i. Friday-Saturday four-game series feature Biola at Westmont, Jessup at Vanguard, Menlo at Azusa Pacific, Fresno Pacific at Concordia and Hawai`i Hilo at Hawai`i Pacific (Friday-Saturday-Sunday). 

PACWEST NEWS AND NOTES: Hawai`i Pacific went 4-0 last week with a sweep of Menlo. Conor Hourigan was terrific in one of the games with five shutout innings, only three hits, no walks and six strikeouts. The Sharks won the Monday-Tuesday series by the scores of 7-2, 8-0, 18-6 and 16-5 to improve to 19-14 overall and 17-11 in the PacWest (fourth place)...Concordia took three of four games against Azusa Pacific. Matthew Kaiser followed up his no-hitter and PacWest Pitcher of the Week award with five shutout innings and just five hits against the Cougars, while Wyatt Madison led the offense with an 8-for-17 week and six RBI...BU's Gabe Magallan tossed a seven-inning complete game againt Vanguard, allowing just two runs and six hits in a 6-2 Eagle win. Biola's Isaiah Leon went 9-for-16 in the series, had a 5-hit game and scored eight times...Gavino Rosales went six innings in a Azusa Pacific victory over Concordia, giving up one run, four hits and no walks...In the Jessup-Chaminade series, both teams received solid five-inning pitching starts. JU's Diego Chavez allowed five hits and one run in a 3-2 win, and CUH's Xavier Stoker allowed just three hits and a run in a 11-1 Chaminade victory...Point Loma freshman Josiah Rodriguez went 8-for-16 against Fresno Pacific, scored seven times, had a pair of doubles and a home run.
