Dominican Sweeps WBB Awards with Pair of Wins

The Penguins took down Point Loma and Concordia to be the first to reach 10 overall wins. Mahliya Wilson was the defensive start and Isobel Crosswhite shown for the offense to gain the sweep.

Dominican kicked off the New Year in a big way with a pair of key conference wins at home. The Penguins knocked off defending champion Point Loma and also took out hot Concordia to become the first PacWest team to reach 10 wins. Mahliya Wilson was the star against the Sea Lions and Isobel Crosswhite was the hero vs. the Golden Eagles, giving DUC a sweep of the awards.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Dominican’s Isobel Crosswhite, F, Sr., 5-9, Fortuna, Calif.                                         
Dominican’s Isobel Crosswhite came off the bench and deposited a career-high 25 points in helping the Penguins win their tenth game with a 75-63 triumph over Concordia. The 5-foot-9 forward hit 10 of 13 shots from the field and had a double-double with 11 rebounds as the Penguins improved to 10-2 and 4-2 in PacWest play. Two days earlier, Crosswhite hit all three shots she took for six points against Point Loma, which was then her season high prior to the breakout game against the Golden Eagles.
 
DEFENDER OF THE WEEK: Dominican’s Mahliya Wilson, G, Fr., 5-8, Chula Vista, Calif.                                 
Dominican’s Mahliya Wilson had seven steals in the win over Point Loma and also added five rebounds to win Defender of the Week. The seven steals against the Sea Lions was a career high and helped propel her team to a revenge victory against the 2024-25 conference champs, who defeated DUC just a few weeks ago in San Diego, 76-71. The San Diego area native also had 21 points, hitting 9-of-12 free throws. This is the second PacWest award for the redshirt freshman, as she was the Player of the Week on November 17 after scoring 30 against UC Merced.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: Dominican is the Team of the Week after the double wins over Point Loma and Concordia. The Penguins moved to 4-2 in conference play and 10-2 overall with the victories to open the 2026 calendar year. Dominican’s 80-74 triumph over Point Loma gave them a season split with the Sea Lions. The Penguins jumped out to a 45-33 halftime lead and finished with five players in double figures. In addition to Mahliya Wilson’s big day (see above) Kayln Buchanon had 14 points and six assists and Keyonee Neal added 12 points and eight rebounds. Versus Concordia, Isobel Crosswhite had a career game and Janiya Swayer was in double figures with 12 points in the 75-63 victory.
 
PACWEST NEWS AND NOTES: Point Loma bounced back from the Dominican loss with a 86-69 win over Menlo. Eiley Tippens had 25 points, nine rebounds and four steals for the Sea Lions, Hannah Golan had 18 points and eight boards and Izzy Navarro had a season high 12 assists to go with 13 points. Alberte Frisch had 23 points to lead the Oaks…Jessup defeated Hawaii Hilo 60-52 for their first PacWest win of the season. Porter Wood had 16 points and Giselle Dogan had 15 off the bench. Tavina Harris had a near double-double for the Vulcans with 14 points and nine rebounds…Fresno Pacific also entered the win column for the first time in league play with a 62-53 triumph over Hawaii Pacific. Sienna Evans had 17 points and four steals to lead the Sunbirds…Vanguard improved to 8-1 overall and 4-0 in PacWest play with a 60-52 victory over Biola. The Lions jumped out to a 16-8 first quarter lead and never trailed. Emma Schaaf had big numbers with 16 points, nine rebounds and four blocked shots. Kaylee Byon added 15 points, seven assists and four steals for the Lions, who have now won six straight games…Azusa Pacific improved to 4-1 in conference play while handing Westmont their first PacWest loss, 71-60 in Santa Barbara. Lauren Jones had 15 points to lead the offense and Keisharna Lucas paced the defense with five steals, seven defensive rebounds and three blocked shots. Lisa Kiefer had a double-double for the Warriors with 11 points and 12 rebounds…Vanguard is the only unbeaten team thus far in PacWest play at 4-0, followed by Westmont and Azusa Pacific at 4-1, Point Loma 5-2, Dominican 4-2 and Concordia 3-2.
 
WHAT’S NEXT: The first week of 2026 is full of PacWest games, beginning today with Concordia traveling to Menlo, Hawaii Hilo is at Fresno Pacific and Hawaii Pacific goes to Jessup. Westmont is at Vanguard on Tuesday, and Thursday features Jessup at Point Loma, Vanguard at Concordia, Hilo at Dominican, Biola at Azusa Pacific and HPU at Menlo.
